Need Savage 24F scope mounting help...badly!
« on: February 25, 2006, 06:34:09 PM »
I have bought a used Savage 24F 223/20 guage combination gun on Gunbroker.com. I do not have the rifle yet but I'm trying to get everything ready for when it arrives. In the sellers pictures it appears to have a flat surface on top that extends from the breech to within an inch or so of the rear sight that I would ASSUME is where a scope mount would be attached. The seller says there are no drilled and tapped holes on the flat surface. So now I'm trying to figure out how in the **** to mount a scope on it. I have found several poor quality and probably mis-labeled pictures on the web and it seems like some 24's have this flat spot on top and some don't (rimfire vs. centerfire models?).  Weaver makes a scope rail for it but it is a simple 1 piece type that would require tapped holes to mount it. The Savage website says all of them now come with a B-Square mount included but I've found references to a rimfire rail built in.  What gives? It seems like one answer contradicts another. I'm guessing it may have something to do with new vs. old models but I don't know and can't get many answers from searching the web and what few I do get leave me more confused than before. Somebody educate me about this rifle and what may be several variations over the years of mounting a scope to it. I'm about to pull my hair out folks!!!!

Bama, don't pull your hair out you'll lose it soon enought. Then you'll look like me. I have not had the 24F model, but some of the older ones have 2 holes on the flat piece and a single one on the rear sight flat. They make 1 or 2 piece mounts I believe for them.

When I was younger I had to shoot a new gun ASAP. But I think I would wait until your new gun arives and buy the mounts. If your are not drilled and tapped you may need a gunsmith anyway.

I believe the rimfire models have the standard groves for the rings to clamp onto. That system works fine for the rimfire barrel but dosen't hold very well with thye shotgun barrel. Regards, Byron

I Have a 24D in 357max/20ga 3 inch. mine took a 92A weaver mount same as my contender. i use a Bushnell turkey scope it has a dimond to fit the turkeys head, but i use the cross hair for the max and the bottom of the dimond for the 20 gauge. the only thing I wish was the 20 gauge was rifeld.

Bama76"

i am looking at my .22 Hornet over 20 gauge Model 24F.  On my gun the scope mounting surface is  rounded and is about 6 inches long.  It came tapped for a scope mount and has a Weaver mount with a Weaver K-6 scope on it.  The rifle that you bought probably has  plugs in the mounting screw holes.   I love that gun and have zapped a bunch of coyotes and a few hogs with it.  Good luck with your 25F.

Don’t know about these new 24s.  Mine that I got back when I was a kid in the 1950’s didn’t have any way to put a scope on it.  In the 1960s I had a bracket welded on top of the .22 barrel.  It’s not pretty looking but to this day it still shoots good.
