Good Day at Range
« on: February 26, 2006, 03:51:51 PM »
Had a great day at the range today, my best group was 3 rounds almost touching at 100 yards off my bench rest. Good enough for me. Ultra Varmint in 223 did its job. Yes, it was the 45 gr jhp Win White box, man that is some good stuff.

Congrats FX4,
I have an .223 ultra that shoots well also.  The ultras seem to be some good shooters.

Sometimes it makes you wonder if H&R didn't design the 223 around the WWB ammo .

Iam glad someone had a good day.  I tried all day to post this as new topic but forem will not let me do it.???
I had another frustrating session with the .44 mag barrel again this weekend.  I loaded up several different weight and size bullets.  The only one that showed any hope was the 240g; .431 laser cast over 8 g of AA#2, 3-inch group at 50 yard.  I would be content with this if it was constant, but even these had an occasional flyer.  The heavy loaded Hornady 300g  XTP-HP weren’t too bad…everything else, including several heavy loads behind .432 Beartooth were all over the place.  It seems as the speed of the bullets go up the accuracy goes down.  I had changed the scope from my last trip to the range where I got similar results.  My .44 Ruger Deerfield will shoot ragged holes with heavy loaded  240g SP at this same 50-yard range.  I looked up the twist rate on the Deerfield and it is 1in 20 while the Handi is 1 in 30.  Is it possible that the slower twist does not stabilize the bullets as the velocity increases?  I have reached the stage where I am grasping for straws.  I took the .44 off and put on the 45/70 and got ragged holes with 300gand 405g bullets.
RJ  ps My 223 shoots great too!

I know some of you guys say you are getting good accuracy from your .44 mag Handi but I have done everything but clean it in Holy Water and it just ain’t happening!   :)    The sad thing is that if it shot good it would be the one I took to the range for giggles and grins.

Where are you finding the 45gr JHP white-box stuff at?   prices too?

My local Wally World only has the 55gr ammo.

Sportsmans Warehouse sells the 45gr WWB for $12.50 or $12.99, Cabelas sells it for too.

RangerJ,

IIRC, the longer the bullet the faster the rate of twist should be.  A 1-30" rate of twist might work a whole lot better with a light, i.e. shorter bullet.  Same as a muzzle loader.  Typically for .45 caliber round ball the rate of twist is 1-60" while for conicals it is increased to 1-28".  It sounds like NEF is pretty far off compared to the Ruger!

The twist rate of the 44mag Handi barrel is 1:38", but the bigger problem is with the oversize bore....have you slugged the bore yet?

Yes I have and it is .432.  I have tried 240g in .431 laser cast and 250gc in .432 Beartooth.  As I said the light loads in the laser cast get my hops up except that there almost always seems to be the occasional flyer, usually to the up and left of about 6” at 50 yards.  While I don’t feel that these results from a ‘pull off’ this could be what is happening.  Not that I am above pulling off target, but I am usually aware when it happens.  I haven’t tried the Beartooth  .432 with a light load yet but as I now have lots of empty 44s I will give that a try.  While 240 cast light loads are listed in several of my manuals I don’t find much in a light-loaded 250 cast, at least in powders that I have.   How many g of AA#2 should be used or another powder in that range??   I will probably load about a half box of each and give each a real good workout.  As all I am wanting to do with this barrel is have a good time punching paper, if these loads don't pan out I might give something in 200g a try.

If your bore slugged .432", then you need .433" bullets from what I've learned here on cast bullet shooting. Sounds like a custom mold or a new barrel from H&R is in order. Here's Accurate's online data...
