best GUN REST for weekend shooter/plinker??
« on: February 27, 2006, 04:45:41 AM »
I've bought a few (unhappy with them), like OUTERS "varmiter", etc.
I'm not a benchrest shooter, but I'd like something that can handle 30 cal, (accurately), and still be "user-friendly" for my grandkids when they're plinking.

After initial sighting in I usually get off the rest and shoot in different positions...I also use a Harris Bipod...both laying down and from sitting position....btw...I also have an Outers (I think its the varmiter)...I haven't had any problems with, what seems to be the problem???

I bought a Caldwell front and rear bag set about 4 years ago and filled them with rice.  Still using 'em without any complaints.  I don't think they cost more than $25 at the time (not counting the rice).  The rear bag has rabbit ears and cradles the stock.  You'll need to remove your sling to get it nested in there snugly.  The front bag is a litte short for most of my rifles.  I keep a short piece of 2X6 in my range bag and set it on top of that for most of my rifles.

As you shoot, recoil will push the fore end of the rifle back, and after a while I have to slide the rifle forward on the front rest again, and maybe straighten the rest upright as it begins to lean forward after a few shots.  I've never really considered this a problem.

MTM Predator rest.  Lightweight, sturdy, $45.  Works great.  It comes apart to shoot handguns out of it too.

I have this setup for shooting at the range. It is simple but does all that I need to find my best reloads.
