I'm picking up a Swede 6.5 X 55 from a friend.  It's partially sporterized but I'd like to put a new stock on it.  Any suggestions?  Up here in Canada the Ramline stocks for them go for about $100.00 but I haven't heard a lot of good things about them.  I don't want to spend huge dollars since I still have to get the gun drilled and tapped for a scope.  I have tried the rifle out and it does shoot well.  Thanks.

I'll recommend you NOT get the Butler Creek. It is pretty bendy. Good wooden stocks are available from Richard's Microfit in Sun Valley CA. They have a web site, I just don't know what the url is. They have some drop in stocks, maybe the small rings Mausers are one of those.  :D

I have a little experience with one on a model 98.  We glass bedded the action.  And if I recall correctly we had to do a little bit of grinding.  Very little.  I picked it up new at a gun show.  The price was far less then $100.

I currently have a Swede M96 that has been sporterized.  Not a bad job, but not a great job.  If I can pickup another Ramline stock at a good price for the M96 I will.  The recoil pad on the one I purchased left something to be desired.  It did a good job taming the recoil but I could pull it apart.

koivu - you can get a decent stock from Boyd's for about $70.  Sometimes Richards take a while to get a stock out - if they don't have any in stock they will wait until they get a number of orders before making them up.  I purchased a Boyd's stock for one of my 98s and she looks and fits just fine.  HTH.  Mikey.

I would rather have a beat up, ugly piece of wood that fits the action than any low quality synthetic.

I put a Ramline on my Win 94, not impressed but should work and they are the only synthetic out there for the Winchester.
Now I have Boyd's laminate on 2 Swede's.
Excellent stock, nice feel. Both are the JRS style.
Go with the Boyd's if you can.

Boyds looks like a very good option.  What Model number of stocks did you order?

I put a Ramline on an elm stocked Swede 96/38 as I didn't want to put any wear on the original stock.  It actually improved the accuracy.  The action bottomed out before the barrel which left about a 1/16" gap under the barrel. With open sights the accuracy is excellent.  I have a Kimber sporterized swede w/ the Ramline that is not as accurate with a scope.  Someone has installed a Limbsaver pad on the Kimber which makes it a pleasure to shoot.  One of my ''need to do" items is to  bed the action on the Kimber.

Siskiyou, #503-122 and #403-122 but they were completely finished.
They work great for the Swede, one black, one brown both sharp looking stocks.
I've got a walnut version for sale #200-046 if your interested. It was fitted to another Swede that I purchased but that one is staying in full military drag, no sportering that one. So my Swede collection is complete.

tbmaker:  Thanks for the model #'s.  I had planned on making a weekend trip to the Big Gun Show in Reno this weekend.  Once and a while they show will have a display of stocks at one of the tables.

The funds for that trip are now being deverted to a trip in a different direction.  A relative passed away and we are traveling to the funeral.  Not unexpected, but a person we respected, and liked.  So instead of a stock a new suit is in order. We are still finding out details.

The two models you have mounted seem to fit into my needs.  The Swede is not a primary hunting rifle for me.  While I do not care for the stock, it is a great shooter, and a proven deer getter.   At this stage in my life I am thinking of dressing the rifle up and passing it on.

Whenever I have the chance to take a deer with my 6.5-55 I marvel at the low  recoil and the 10 yard tip over that takes place!  This is my favorite carry gun, a T3 Hunter.  The Swedes had there act together long time ago.   Buckfever

It is a nice round. My Wife uses one, a sporterized M96 & when I hear her
shoot, I know that I need to head that way soon.
