Frustrating day at the range
« on: February 27, 2006, 02:45:27 PM »
I had another frustrating session with the .44 mag barrel again this weekend.  I loaded up several different weight and size bullets.  The only one that showed any hope was the 240g; .431 laser cast over 8 g of AA#2, 3-inch group at 50 yard.  I would be content with this if it was constant, but even these had an occasional flyer.  The heavy loaded Hornady 300g  XTP-HP weren’t too bad…everything else, including several heavy loads behind .432 Beartooth were all over the place.  It seems as the speed of the bullets go up the accuracy goes down.  I had changed the scope from my last trip to the range where I got similar results.  My .44 Ruger Deerfield will shoot ragged holes with heavy loaded  240g SP at this same 50-yard range.  I looked up the twist rate on the Deerfield and it is 1in 20 while the Handi is 1 in 30.  Is it possible that the slower twist does not stabilize the bullets as the velocity increases?  I have reached the stage where I am grasping for straws.  I took the .44 off and put on the 45/70 and got ragged holes with 300gand 405g bullets.
