What's New In Your World?
« on: February 28, 2006, 06:35:51 AM »
Well,
things have been kind of slow around here since deer season ended, so I've been expanding my horizons.
Gearing up for coyote hunting and took up hand loading. Picked up a Stevens 200 for a Dog Zapper in 25-06. She was born butt ugly and I threw a coat of plum colored spray paint on her factory gray syn stock that didn't really help matters. Finaggled a like new Bushnell 3x9 from a local pawn for $50 that decidedly fit this this guns image.
Loaded up 75 gr v-max and headed for the range. Got her down to a consistent 1 1/4" with my eyes and called it good. She ain't no Remmy but I can't help but like the little gun.
Traded a vxiii for a like new M77 stainless/syn all weather in 30-06 that should be showing up sometime next week. Will be my first Ruger centerfire. Don't really mind a heavy rifle too much and am thinking I might like this one.     Thoughts.........?

I know the feeling Killdeer.  Most of the huntin is over and still too cold to go fishin.  I went to a gunshow in Jonesboro Sat. and seriously considered buying a Stevens in .243.  I have a couple of Rem. 223s that are sub MOA and I guess I expect all rifles to shoot that good. I need to hear good range reports before I buy.  All I bought was a stainless Encore frame for $225.  I got tired of swiching barrels on my one frame.  I'll be over to NW AR in a few days and may try to get up to my brothers place near Powell MO to do a little shooting... Of course you probably already have the varmints cleaned out of that area. LOL  Keep yer powder dry.

James,
the area around Powell is stunningly beautiful and has so far escaped my coyotic intentions. As far as the Stevens, I'm sure with a trigger tweak, bullets suited to her throat dimensions, and a more serious bench approach, she would likely be sub moa.
You ever fish Black River or Cane Creek in NE Ar ?

:D Yea it's low and slow here to. All my hunting is finished, until September 06 anyway. I have nowhere to hunt varmints, never even tried that. The only thing I can really hunt from here until September is crow. But I was brought up the "YOU SHOOT IT- YOU EAT IT BOY" way and I’m not that hungry.
Man it's going to be a long summer. I do go to the pistol / rifle range when I can during the summer months. That range somewhat helps me keep my sanity. I have been to every gun show in town since deer and squirrel season have ended. I took an old shotgun and an old rifle (dust collectors) to last weekends show to try and sell. To my surprise I sold them as soon as I walked through the door and got what I wanted for both. I put the funds towards a brand new Taurus PT-92. Here it is

Mine is a special edition it has a brushed or (matte) stainless finish. They don't even list it on the web site. It was a special run for their supplier of the year. Here we go.

This should keep me occupied and get me through the summer.
Hey my brother and my father both shoot that same Ruger you have there. It's a good gun, tuff as nails and even with the heavy triggers their still good shooters. My dad has an old Simmons pro hunter on his and boy if he doesn’t hit every dang on thing he shoots at. Maybe this has a lot to do with the fact that he is retired from the air force (30 some years). He was listed as a chief master sergeant. He was also an expert firearms trainer. Well enough rambling.
Sorry so long but you asked for it. Have a safe summer.

killdeer,
I duck hunt the Black river (Dave Donaldson WMA) but not fished it.  I heard of some crappie being caught there before the last snow.  I'm not familiar with the Cane.  I usually trout fish on the Spring River up by Mammoth Spring. I'm a hillbilly and have a hard time eating fish out of some of this muddy water in NE AR.  I do fish the watershed lakes around here when the mud settles out in them.  Next month I plan to be eating trout, turkey and mushrooms and sipping sassafras tea.

james opened the door when he said in part,".....to cold to go fishing."
I`m in Florida so you know what i`m doing..................bass fish-en.
I know there are other guys on here that live in Fla and you can bet if they fish that`s what they do until it`s gun time again.
Course in the summer time when it gets hot, i mean really hot , i fish at night.  Just me and the gators.
