45-70 open sight accuracy, and anybody try the limbsaver der
« on: February 28, 2006, 10:10:39 AM »
Just got my first handirifle in .270. Haven't even got to shoot it yet, and I'm planning on getting a 45-70 barrel for it. To me, even though my old eyes aren't what they used to be, it's just sacreligous to put a scope on a 45-70. I was wandering what kind of accuracy you guys with open sighted 45-70's are getting. How far out do you feel comfortable shooting with the factory iron sights, and that ladder sight I've been reading about. I hate to spread this thread too thin, but has anybody tried one of those limbsaver barrel de resonators yet?

AJ, there are a few threads on the De-resonator, here and in the bolt action forum, the search feature is working well today, check em out, see the easy search tips sticky to get the most out of the search function.

There are also several threads on iron sights and aperture sights, there's a link in the FAQ on peep & firesights, too. I get 1½" or smaller groups with the williams WGRS/Firesight combo in my 45-70 Handi, about the same with the FP sight on my .45-120 BC.....even with my 59yr old bespectacled eyes!!

AJ,The iron sights as furnished from the factory on my 45/70 barrel were very accurate out to 100 yards which is as far as my range goes.
I hope you really enjoy that .270.It's a really nice one.
