450 Mong Brass question
« on: February 28, 2006, 01:07:10 PM »
Another 450 Mongo brass question. I have read about the brass reforming process of the 444 Marlin, and other brass cases.

However, Norma has what is called a 45 cal. Basic Unprimed brass that measures 2.9" long. This brass isn't cheap by any means ($1.90 per case) but from what I can see, it is 45 cal brass that will fit the 45-410 T\C barrel and extract with no issues, and the 45 cal bullet will seat with no issues. The brass can be trimmed to what ever length below 2.9" the user would want.

There is a price for time, but am I missing something here or would this avoid all of the work that goes into forming the brass case?

Seems it would be simple to just trim, prime, powder, seat and shoot.

Help me if I am missing something here.

Thanks.

Sounds like a great deal to me.  The brass might be expensive, but you will not waste the extra $$$$$powder, primers and bullets to fireform.
....make it count

the 450 Mongo is a straight wall, like a long 45LC.  I suggest sticking with the 444 Marlin, it is a very strong case and cheaper then the 45 Basics which wont work(more below).  Fire forming a 444 into a 450 mongo is easy as pie.

The 45 Basic is a tapered wall case with a larger diameter base and designed to use .458" rifle bullets, not the .452" pistol bullets.

The "Basic" is a generic 45cal (458 rifle) x 3.25" case, which can be used as a 45-120 or trimmed to a 45-110, 45-100 or 45-90.

If you tried to use a trimmed 45 Basic case in a long chambered 45LC or 45/410, it wont fit because of the Sharps style large diameter casing.
