Assuming you have a cross-draw and a strong side holster, which gun to you go for first? Or does it matter? Or does the stage description dictate your choice?

As a rule I will go with the crossdraw first..about the only time I dont is when the stage calls for you to be sittin on a horse or in chair where it might be hard to do so with out breakin the 180,,,

I do the cross draw first, that way I can be standing with my side to the line so I do not brake the 170 rule :-)

The 170 rule means the muzzle of the firearm must always be straight down range +/- 85 degrees. this includes the verticle as well as the horizontal. So you draw an immaginary line straight down the firing line and then bring it in 5 degrees on either side. Do the same thing with your body, a line from your toes to your head, then bring it in 5 degrees at the top and bottom. Allowances must be made when drawing a straight draw holster since it is virtually impossible to draw and holster without breaking the 170.

There is the Cross-Draw Two-Step that describes the foot movements that we do when we use the cross-draw holster. Some can just turn their upper bodies but some RO's want you to actually move your feet as well as your whole body.

Hey Ho Jax Orebetter!

What a can o' worms. I am first to admit that I am not too keem on such rools, but what you jest described seems to be a 10 degress rool, not a 170 degree rool. Let me get myself in trouble by explaining my understanding and then you and others can try to edgekate me.

Under SASS rules, the shooter gets 170 degrees of firearm barrel pointing travel in any plane of movement given that straight down range is the 90 degrees reference and moving the barrel in any direction adds degrees to the 90. So what ya really get is 85 (half of 170) degrees freedom of pointing in any direction from straight down range. So, if you point straight out to either side, that would be 90 degrees and yer in violoation by 5 degrees. Same if you point straight up and in theory straight down, but like you said it would be near impossible to draw or reholster if straight down were enforced strictly.

Clear as mud? I thought so. :roll:

I don't use crossdraw. I would probably be DQ'd for not doing the dance. I always draw the left hand first, do the border shift and fire right handed.

It depends on the stage. If there is movement to the right after first pistol then left pistol first. If there is a move to the left then right pistol first. That way the gun is inside the 170 as you turn for the move. If both are shot in sequence with no move, then target order comes into play. If the pistol targets are engaged from the left then left pistol first. A sweep from the right with the right pistol. That helps me remember the firing order. I don't use a cross draw but the theory is the same.

my mind is a whirl--i fell down three times, twisted my knee, hit my head a n d my wife got mad at me for spilling coffee on the rug trying to figure all these steps out-- if i join in these rituals can i just close my eyes draw both guns and blaze away-thats my normal tendency anyway :wink: :wink: :bye:

williamlayton; that ain't usually how its done -- but what ya describe is somewhat vaguely similar what ya do in gunfighter catagory. Ya draw both and shoot alternately and can switch leads every other shot if'n ya desire. BUT, not too many gunfighter friendly stages at some clubs and they usually want ya to be experienced before ya gunfight. Double Duelist is a style or technique and not a catagory; but its what gunfighters do on unfriendly stages -- draw one, shoot it one handed holstering when empty and using other revolter as required later in stage firing one handed with other hand.

Now, as to the original question; which gun first; for Gunfighter or Double Duelist action I am pretty much committed to using my left (strong) side first, no matter what the target placement is. It is tempting to me to shoot a right to left sweep with the right hand first, but I resist that temptation. Try to make things a simple as I can soze I don't screw-up too much. Then again; I'll never be a trophy taker at this.
