Miking case heads:Blade or Standard Micrometer
« on: March 02, 2006, 01:26:21 PM »
I have read in some sources that cases heads should be miked for expansion with a blade micrometer but most sources make no mention, blade or standard leading me to wonder if a standard mike was used. Good standard mikes can be had for abour $50 but he cheapest blade miKe I could find was over $200. What's the scoop.

I don't know why you would need a blade mic. Or a micrometer at all. Just use a good set of callipers.  KN

Case heads must be miked to 0.0001". This requires a micrometer. Calipers are typically accurate only to 0.001"

I don't know why you'd need a blade mic. You don't measure in the groove, you measure the pressure ring itself. Which is above the rim/extractor groove. In a belted case the ring is just above the belt,I believe .0001 mike should give a better "feel" than any calipers, and should be cheaper than verier calipers.
