Does anyone know where to get a leather cartrige holder for on the buttstock? I've seen them in pictures but have never came up with a source to buy them from.

Wow...$60-$70 bucks to hold only 5 rounds.  My $6 Kolpin holds 9.  

The leather looks real nice, but my dad has one on his Browning 30-06 and the shell loops stretched with use, and now the shells can fall out if you're not careful.  His also does't look so nice any more.  10 years of walking through brush has not been kind to the leather.  It's all scratched up.

I've also heard him tell a story about how he was unable to get a round out quickly because of the flap that goes around the bullet.  When he pulled up on the cartridge, the flap bent and wedged the round in place.  He was easily able to get the round out after he stopped to look at the problem, but he did miss the opportunity for a second deer.


Just some things to think about.  I guess it depends on your application.

Good leather products aren't cheap...and yes leather  will stretch over time so too will elastic and nylon..and most nylon shell holders won't stand up to years of walking thru thorns and briars without tearing and falling apart...the good leather ones will... and... if properly cared for will last a very long time...and one of the nice things with Galco..they stand behind their products..no matter how old they are..as long as they haven't beem abused..

I completely understand that good leather costs good money.  My point is that putting a $70 dollar shell holder on a $200 rifle is like kids these days putting $3000 rims on a Toyota Canary.  

IMHO, the allure of the Handi is its price vs performance ratio.

A $6 holder (from my experiance) will last 5 years, so why buy a $60 one that will only last 3 times as long?  

Don't get me wrong, I love leather, and if it's your gun, you can spend all you want on accessories.  I was just giving my opinion.

It's just a matter of what a fella wants, I have an Ultra and a Target with $300 barrels on em, not what everyone would spend, but to me, what I wanted is worth it. :wink:

Personal preference really..and this is what he ask for..I've used both..My favorite is a Uncle Mikes Neoprene shell holder with some Rubatex under it..It cushions my cheek and makes shooting all my rifles more enjoyable..but I much prefere the looks of the leather over it..Now..if they would combine them and make a sorbathane top with a leather shell holder and trim...I'd be on it like a duck goes for water... :D

I would opt for something with a flap over the cartridges.  I pedaled my mountain bike up one of our closed logging roads to where I could head into the high country.  I had a pack on my back and the HandiRifle strapped to it.  Somehow by the time I stopped there wasn't a cartridge one in the Uncle Mike's butt carrier.  I rode back and managed to find about half of them, enough to continue the hunt, but I lost confidence in carrying the shells in the open.

But those Galco cuffs sure look good!

i have ashell holder with a velcro cover over it havent lost a shell yet.......also have a sling with a shellholder built in it works well also,,,,,,jb......when i see a deer i always take a bullet out of wherever and put it in my left hand for a fast second shot.......for the other deer.....cause im not going to miss the first one :-D  :-D  :-D lol......jb

I agree..I like the small case type as well..slip it in your shirt pocket keeps the ammo warm too..it looks like a old modified cigerette holder..except longer..but having one or 2 rounds in your fingers for the second shot as needed is pretty fast.. :agree:

If you have a local leathersmith, he/she may be able to fashion you anything you want.

Theres a couple Amish guys about 15mile from me that can make any leather good I could ever want, but costs a little more then a mass produced item.  ...sometimes worth it for a one of a kind item.

I like the idea of a combination type with the leather shell holder.  I had an idea once of ttryin' to figure something out with one of those fake sheepskin things they sell for you seat belt...you know, to keep it from rubbing your neck raw.  OOPS, there goes another $1,000,000 idea...and that could have been the one, too!LOL

i have had a hard time finding a "tight" shell holder also. i came up with a nice one. i took a timex web watch band, which has a 2-3 inch strip of elastic on it. i stiched 3 lines across it and now i can carry 5 .223 rounds right on my wrist, which works great for fast reloads w/ a single shot.

I've got an Uncle Mike's on my survivor, but I'd sure like to build up the stock about 1" for a nicer cheek weld.
I'll email Fred Choate and see what he says for building it up- the stock Survivor I don't think can take an adjustable cheekpiece, but I'll know soon...

For you 357 Mag/Maxi hunters, a 7.62x39 stripper clip works great as a pocket ammo holder.
