I have been looking for a 357 mag.  I do not yet have a S&W and thought I would get one in 357.  

The local shop has a modle 686 in a special edition blued stainless.
6 inch barrel.
6 shot.
Very nice wood grips.
The hammer is the old style with the firing pin attached to it.
Price is $499.

Is price ok?
Is old style hammer ok?  Looks like newer inventory is the transfer bar type hammer (like my ruger).  Is this a problem?

Opinions or questions for me to ask both helpful.

:D  I thought the blued 686 was actually a 586.  Stainless models are 600 series and blued tend to be 500 series.  I love mine with the full underlug and the hammer mounted firing pin.  i have not had a single problem with mine.  I purchased it  in december, used, 6 round cylinder, 4" barrel, used of course because these are not made anymore for $325.  But that price is where I live, prices vary state to state.

I'm not a S&W pro, but I agree with Spencer--always thought the blue version was a 586.  Nonetheless, I once owned a 6" 686 with the pin-in-the-hammer.  Loved it.  But, $500 seems a bit steep.  My  :money:

This gun is new, never fired...sorry I did not make this clear in original post.

Modle 686

Serial # BBV 3299

It is a stainless gun that has been blued at the factory.   I have never heard of this before but that is why this gun is supposed to be a special edition.

Is this a fair price for a new gun?

The fact that this is a special edition, would account for the higher cost. You now need to ask yourself a few questions, that only you can answer.
 
Do I have the extra money to spend for a special edition firearm. (Remember, this particular gun could really jump in value at some later date.)

Is the blued stainless of any real value to you.  If this gun will be used for hunting, the combination of a dark finish (less likely to spook game) and stainless steel (a little more forgiving in damp or wet conditions) might be worth a few extra bucks.

How many are being made with this particular finish, and will this become a standard finish for S&W in the future. (If only a few are being made it has greater potential for becoming a collectable. If it might become a standard finish, the future value might be less.)

In my opinion, if this gun were a .44 mag. I’d jump on it.  Since I don’t hunt with a .357, I would not spend the extra money unless I wanted the gun as a collectable.

I checked the modle number and dash # you mentioned.  It is a 686-3.  I was hoping to research this a little further and try to determine when the gun was made.  Any thoughts or help with this?

I see that you have also been asking this question on the smith and wesson forum.  You might want to share what you found out on that web site with us because I also learned from your question on that site that it is a "blued Stainless" finish.  so when you posted the ?? about that finish in a 686, you were correct.

I have decided to pass on the blue 686.  The fact that bluing wears off easily made up my mind.  This may be a great gun for a collection.  But I need a gun to shoot not to look at.

I will be looking for a 686 or a 586.

About 10 years ago or so S&W developed a way to blue (or apply a blue/black finish) stainless. They did sell some blued 686's but I don't remember how much they went for or how many they made. I don't remember them being out of line with other 686 models. Have never seen any since. I wouldn't pay more than what a good quality used 686 is going for- $350 or so.

Well I went in to get the stainless 6 in 686 and ended up buying the blued stainless gun.  

I have researced the gun and have found:

It was made in 1989.

There where 2876 guns made.

The finish is midnight black, together with custom wood grips make this a special edition firearm.

This gun has never been fired and was in private collection, then sold to gun shop.

This gun will now be fired and used as a target gun with limited hunting use.

Thanks for load data.

I have gun on lay a way and will pick up within two weeks, that will give me time to order brass, dies, etc.  

I plan to target and hunt with this gun.  To that end I need to know a good hunting bullet (I like xtp in other handguns) I plan to match weight of hunting bullet with swc lead bullets so recoil will be similar,  I will get a few thousand rounds under my belt by hunting season.  Do you hunt with your 158 grn  JHP?

When I get gun I will take a digital and try to post (I do not yet know how).

I picked up this gun today and will soon be loading ammunition.

Why have I not had a Smith before now I do not know, it is a fine firearm!
