Receiver mounted peep

:grin: Has anyone ever mounted a receiver peep sight on an H&R/NEF shotgun or rifle? I ordered a Lyman 53 and plan to mount it on the receiver of a Md.088 12 ga. slug gun-drill and tap two holes. I really enjoy this forum, guys, and welcome to the new members. Hunman55

Hmmm, you must mean do the drilling and tapping on just the shotgun barrels, cuz all rifles cept the 45C/410 come drilled and tapped already as far as I know....

If I read it right, looks like that is a 10ga, 2 3/4 chamber.  Couldn't make anything else out that would say the choke.

It was the Savage model 94B, with the Wards trade name on it. 12 gauge, 2 3/4 chamber, smooth bore. Whatever the choke, it was removed when the barrel was cut to 19 inches. The receiver sight is an old Redfield off a Winchester model 94. I have held it against a NEF action, and it would work fine. I have thought about getting another sight designed for the 94 series and having it mounted on a Handi. The two advantages over a barrel mounted sight is 1) It would not have to stand up to the impact of the action closing. 2) Would be closer to the eye, where some shooters prefer their receiver sights. Of course each barrel would have to have an appropriate (height) front sight mounted.

I know what you mean about the "old" eyes. I had to find a magnifing glass to verify the make of the sight. I had forgotten the make since I had this shotgun put together over 25 years ago when I lived in Anchorage. At that time this was the "in thing" to carry while salman fishing on the rivers.

Thanks Wally--I really like that idea--it will save me having to buy more than 1 peep for my BC/Target combo, plus I'll be able to use the take-offs from those 2 barrels for my 44 and 30-30

:grin: Wally, that's a nice looking old Savage-like that front sight set-up too. I have a Lyman 53 on the way(old one off ebay). It will go on a 088 H&R 12-barrel cut to 19 and fitted with a Rhino 5 in. rifled choke. It is very accurate and hard on the shoulder. Have to add weight. Thanks for the info, guys. I know what your mean by recoil in these light singles. In the early '80s the best recoil pad was the Pac Deaccelerator so that was what I used. And recoil has not been too bad. But since then they have come with a lot of new ideas on recoil pads. If you mount a good one, you might not have to add weight. Give that a try first. Nobody wants to pack any more weight then is needed.
