New to Coyotes
« on: March 04, 2006, 07:30:13 PM »
Hi everyone. I just started out hunting coyotes. I've been wanting to do it for a while and now I am trying. I got a few calls from wal-mart to start out with. One is a Buck Gardner Rabbit Distress/Coaxer. The other is an open reed distress. I am using my H&R .308 with a 3-9x40 scope. Anything else I need to "get going good". Do I need a howler or something like a Primos Hot Dog? Any help appreciated, Justin

Hey justin,

sounds like you are starting out right.if you can find a tape to know what sound to make that will help.and some of the elk calls that look like the distress calls work great also..even better.instead of blowin them for elk blow it like a rabbit gettin eatin alive by them filthy coyotes.
don't get discouraged.this I believe is a bad time to start calling.if you have time.I would wait till next sept are oct to get after them.the fruit of your labor will be rewarded better I believe.
and the most importent thing.don't move once you set up and start calling.just use your eyes to look around and don't move yer head back and forth.camo is a good thing.use it if you have it.try and keep the sun to your back and the breeze to yer face.coyotes are not only hunrgy most of the time But curious..so any noise you make that sounds like something hurt are dying will bring them.good luck and keep us posted.
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

Welcome Justin To the forum, I think you will enjoy your self here, Lot of good info mixed with a little Bovine Splatter. Don't worry about the calls you will end up with a wash tub full in a While, Just find something that will sound like a smashed rabbit and get your self in a sitting position and be as still as death, in other words don't move nothing but your eye balls. You will do fine don't worry :D  Good luck.......Joe......

Dont just blow into the call with your mouth but rather call from the diaphram.  This is the same source of air you would use such as in clearing your throat. You have to play the part and make the call quaver & cry & anguished & beg that yote to come and get you.

one thing that was not metioned.if your new gear is all shiny.where the sun could make it glare are glint..you might consider wrapping it with cammo tape are cloth then taping it.my shotgun is painted with ultra flat camo paint and my dedicated rifle is taped and clothed with camo.even have some burlap hot glued to various places to kinda break up the rifles siluette..
and if you are new to this and have never had filthy coyotes come in..be ready.some times they come in fast.on you before you can say jackrobin.soooo.for a right hander.I put my left hand on the forearm(where it would be when it whould be at my shoulder when ready to shoot.) I try to keep the pistol grip in my lap right below my callin hand so my hand just drops down to the grip as my left arm is lifting it up to my shoulder.and slings are like snakes..I have snagged my sling on bushes so many times when raising it to my shoulder.some times it will not raise as branches won't break.then other times I pull it up so hard that part of the desert landscape is hanging from the sling..he he he..
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.
