if i was looking to buy one........and i didn't allready have a .22 k-hornet barrel for my contender, i would get the fireball! mostly for the modern design, and thicker brass. and it will go faster than the hornet ever will.

I agree with the former comments!

I have both, a Hornet in Ruger M-77/22 and a 221 Fireball in a 26 inch Encore barrel!

The Fireball isn't all that loud, but the Hornet is a lot quieter yet!

You will have a lot more options going for you with the Fireball!

A lot depends on just what you want to do with it!
For instance I limit myself to 150 yards with the Hornet and 300 (+_) with the Fireball!  Last winter I shot a coyote at (a lazered) 325 yards!  No hold-over what so ever!  He didn't go far!

I was mistaken on the date, it happened 27 Feb 04.

I was using my Encore in:
Caliber: .221 Remington Fire Ball, 26 inch barrel
Bullet: 40 grain Speer SP (.223 diameter)
Powder: 19 grains IMR 4198 (slightly compressed)
Primer: CCI 400
Velocity: 3700 FPS (3-shots 3707, 3718 & 3692)

DISCLAIMER: I am not recommending that anyone use this load, I'm just saying that it worked for me. I therefore assume no responsibility for it's use!

DISTANCE: 325 yards, according to my Bushnell Yardage Pro!

Why not just get a 222 or 223, plenty of brass can load down or up. Bullet choice is better, not that loud and they are accurate. I sold both of my Hornets and my .222 and my 22/250 and my.243, Ruger.  Kept the Rem. .243,  to shoot vermin with.

My 221 Fireball in the 26 inch Encore will out-do my 223 Rem in a Rem M-7 with an 18 inch barrel by a considerable margin!

So, a lot depends on what you are going to get for a rifle!

Hey Chuck not to be argumentative but I tried to work up a load with 4198 and could never get more than 3150 out of it. I switched to 10x and get great acurracy but cant begin to get that kind of velocity. What kind of groups are you getting with that? do you have any pressure signs? I'm not trying to be a jerk I'm just jealous.
