WHAT DO YOU GUY'S THINK ABOUT THE WILD WEST GHOST RING SIGHT
« on: March 06, 2006, 07:05:40 PM »
i am thinking about buying it for my 1895g 45-70.
it has the skeletonized front hood and williamsfire sight..
this gun will be used in heavy cover with shots at 100 yards at most.
is it worth the 149.00 price tag ?
thanks...jeff
one good shot is worth the wait !!!

It looks extremely cool.

I would like to add a question on top of JEFF's:  What is the practical difference between the Wild West sight and getting a Williams' Foolproof and fire sight on front?

Thanks for any replies.

Buy a Williams and save the money.  You are just buying a fancy name with WW.

I really like the improved sight picture from the XS ghost ring and partridge front. Got it for 70.00 and Midway.

Dont wast your money. I had a WW sight that I picked up used and sold it. There is very little adjustment for windage on them. And it was kind of a PITA I went back to the Williams FP. IMHO it is about $100 over priced.

I'm with tbmaker. I use the XS sight systems on my 1957 vintage Winchester and my 1895 CB in 45-70. At 56yoa I can see my sights again.

I originally had the XS ghost ring with the protective ears but switched to the wwg sight becase it sat lower on the gun and was more comfortably to shooting offhand and it also seemed more durable.  As to the durablitly issue I really have no complaints with either sight and I perfered the xs's excellent front post over the fiber optic  for precise shooting.  Right now I have the tritium front sight and like it much more than the fiber optic.  They are very nice sights even if they are a bit pricey.

Go with Williams and SAVE. Unless you are gonna shoot several loads and need to readjust things frequently, I'd suggest you take a look at the WGRS. It is the smallest and least expensive. Just unscrew the aperature and sight through the housing if you want a "ghost ring".

The WWG ghost ring may be overpriced if you use your gun in conditions where the Williams doesn't seem fragile - they are somewhat fragile in the use they see where I live and hunt. The WWG sight is well made and very strong. I like the two I have and don't worry about the sights being bumped or broken even when the gun wearing them shares a spot in the boat with 1000 pounds or more of firewood. I realize that isn't how most guns are used but it is a place where the WWG sight is definitely worth the money.

Looked at the Brockman, a little pricy. I may still give it a try some other time.  Ordered a Williams FP this a.m.

And that is the key, IMO.  Very few people actually NEED the ruggedness of the WWG sight, and, let's be realistic, the only thing you really get for that extra dough is the assurance that your gun CAN be thrown into the boat on top of (or even under) the 1,000 lbs of firewood.  The actual sight picture isn't very different at all, and different sized front sight posts and aperatures are available on the less expensive models.

Me, I went with the XS sights for my plain-jane Marlin 336A that is for deer-hunting use when still-hunting on the ground up-close in timber.  If I was in Alaska and had a guide-gun setup for big brown bear medicine, I would have gone with the WWG sights.

Well, I have never had the Wild West, but I thought the XS was outragously high. I bought 3 of their front sights and one rear for my 1895cb 4570. Didn't have enough ajustment in it. I eventually ordered a Lyman Receiver sight and put on it. Lyman said none of their sights fit a Marlin 1895cb, but I guess they aren't gunsmiths. I ordered two for a Model 94 Winchester. I put one on my Model 92 clone, and one on my 1895 marlin cowboy. Works like penicillin used to.
