considering a Weatherby Vangaurd Varmint sp

Have any of you guys had any expeirience with the heavy barrel varmint special in 223? what do you think of them?

not the weathrby,But I have several rifles that are heavy barreled Varmit/target rifles.they work for me..But there weight makes them kinda hard to lug around in the field.and for, lets say filthy coyote huntin.where you may have to get on them fast and swing.may not be the best suited rifle.but there are a couple old timers here that would disagree. one still uses cordite,and the other has a call made out of a trearanosouas tooth that he shot back in 7ad..he he he..

Weathrby is a big name in big game hunting. They had and maybe still do have the Weathrby .224 belted mag, awesome little caliber but not any better then the swift or the 22-250.

Why do you want the 223 in a Weathrby? Lot's of other rifles out there that I personally think can out shoot a Weathrby and don't cost as much. I know it's a personal choice, what ever you buy I hope you're happy with it.

Years ago I use to go to the Weathrby store in Southgate California. I bought a 218 bee from them and got to meet the man ( Roy ) once, that was an honor. I also met one of the guys that won the Weathrby Trophy, C. J. McElroy. Cool store to hang out in lol. :wink:

Well Sir, I have had a few Weatherbys in my time, Still have a few but no 223s. My 223s consist of Remingtons, Rugers and Sako 223. Also have a Sako Viven in 222 Mag. Also have a winchester 223 WSSM, But my favorite Coyote Gun is a Remington 22-250 with 55gr Ballistic tip nosler.
Next in line is my Remington 700 6MM with 55 gr ballistic tip nosler. If I am working tight cover i use a 22 hornet by Ruger ( very accurate little gun ) A Feller can't have too many guns. As for your question about heavy Barrels. Great for long shots at yotes or P-Dogs but a pain in the pants for normal hunting. You would not belive how many times i have had to say NO THANKS to my friends. I guess I am telling my age when i tell folks when i bought the little gun. Its just like it was the day i took it out of the box no dings or scratches, Looks like NIB. I appreciate all the input but I am mainly asking about the Vangaurd. I am not using it for a coyote gun. I want a ground squirel and prarie dog gun. I will setup a table or bypod to pop the little guys at 2-300 yards. I am mainly just asking about the quality and accuracy of the vangaurd.

in my experience both quality and accuracy are very good.

If you don't mind ugly,  then look at a a savage, it is most likely the most accurate out of the box rifle built today regardless of price.  You will probably be happiest  with whatever looks best and feels good to you no matter  what shoots best or what you pay for it.   Larry

I looked at the heavy barrel Savage but it has such a huge grip that  I couldnt confortably wrap my hand around it. I did end up getting the Vangaurd. (The Red Mist version) I was worried about the accuracy because the target they enclose was 1.4" but I cleaned the the barrel and reworked the trigger to 2lb and shot 5-3 shot groups all under 1 inch and 2 were right at 1/2 inch. The actions was flawless, so I am a happy camper. Thanks for the input.
