Ruger No. 1 ejection problems
« on: March 07, 2006, 08:08:19 PM »
Anybody have problems with fired brass clearing the safety during ejection?

The Brass is always  forcefully ejected out  of the chamber but gets hung up on the safety.  I always have to manually clear it before the next reload  (very slow).  This is a Ruger No. 1 Tropical Rifle in .458

I have had this rifle for years and played around with it from time to time.  It has always done this  but  I never gave it much thought  since i didn't hunt with it much in the past.   Mostly it has been a safe queen.

This year I am considering using it on a Spring Brown bear hunt.  Any replies greatly appreciated. Thanks.....Balto

I've only had that happen when shooting off a bench, and that's a good thing as it's easy to put the brass back in the box. I've never had it happen when shooting off hand.

Mine has never given me that problem. You can adjust how hard they eject with the adjusting screw. Maybe that might help to lessen or increase the spring tension?

I also have and use a .458 tropical and have the same problem.Since a second shot has not been nessisary to date there has not been a bad moment,as I have developed a routine for a quick reload.I was unaware
that it could be adjusted I will look into it.Thanks for the tip

By removing the forearm on a #1 or #3 to access the adjusting nut, you can get the adjustment down to function as an extractor. It is possible for a #1 specialty smith to inlet the safety into the tang as the finer shotguns are. E.A. Brown comes to mind.

I was thinking of having Brown rebarrel a #1 and adding some of the trick parts.I was wondering if anyone has had any work on #1s done by them.I have one of their rifles and it is great, finish, fit, and truly a tack driver.

Both of my #1's had the brass hang up on the safety.  A good gunsmith with some stones can grind the safety back just enough so the spent cases will clear it, yet not take off so much as to leave a hole visible when the safety is in the "safe" position.

Or you can cant your rifle a bit to help the spent shell fall while getting the second shot ready....

Thanks for the replies,

I don't think it is a ejector adjustment since the cases fly out fast and clear until they hit the safety tang  -then they just bounce partially back into the chamber.

I think I will send it to  a smith and have it stoned down a little (or do it myself) .  Thanks for all the ideas.........Balto
