243, 270, 280, 30-30, 30-06, 308, 7mm-08, 45-70.

Take your pick all would work for your application.

I personally would choose the 30-30, 308, or the always popular 45-70.

Get a .308 or 45/70.  Avoid the .44 (personal experience)

The standard reply is 6-8 weeks, but most people have found they get them back sooner than that.  Mine took 2 weeks and 3 days.  I was very pleased.

I'm seconding the advice to avoid the 44 mag--mine is shooting good with .430 hardcast bullets but that's luck of the draw.

45-70, 30-30 are my recommendations-if you handload you can use pointed bullets in the 30-30 which will carry a bit farther than the round-nosed kind found in factory loads.

How long would your longest shot be? around here 50 yds is a long shot for deer; my longest on this side of the cascades was 80 yds.

Bythe way, shooting down a road is probably not a good idea.--even with a good view a bullet could skip/ricochet quite aways.

Both are great choices, I am looking at getting a .280 barrel. The .280 will give you more range. Ofcourse you may not need the extra range, but you have it in case you need it.  Good luck in your choice.

Can't go wrong with the .270 or 30-06, either.
