Shot my CZ550 416 Rigby today, 2 words "Tack Driver&quo
« on: March 09, 2006, 12:21:57 PM »
I went to the range today to sight in my CZ 550  416 Rigby.
I got it on paper and made adjustments at 25 yards. I then moved out to 100 yards and zeroed the gun in 1 inch high. I did a 3 shot group and got a 1 inch group. I did another 3 shot group when the barrel cooled and got another 1 inch group at 100 yards. The gun is awesome. I have a Leupold VXIII 1.5X5X20mm and was using Norma brass and 300 gr. Barnes X bullets. I shot a total of 50 rounds. The mercury recoil suppressor I installed in the stock helped with the recoil, I am not going to install a muzzle break on it. The glass bedding and floating the stock worked great.  Now to take it on a hunt.  :D

Sounds good to me! MOA may not be necessary for this type of gun, but it
is nice for any gun & it is great to know a rifle will perform as long as we
do.   :D

Were they hand loads and if so what was the powder /grains and velocity you were using to get such a nice group.

They were handloads. I am using 300 gr. Barnes X bullets with 106 gr. of Reloader #22. I do not have a chronograph so I don't know the velocity. I tried several different loads but settled on the 106 gr's. I am very pleased with the performance. It is not even close to the max load so it is a safe and within the specs of the Barnes reloading manual #3. The manual puts it in at 2839 fps.  :D

I have got a water buffalo with my Encore in 416 Rigby, now I just need to plan a hunt to use the CZ. I am thinking of taking it on my upcoming black bear hunt just to actually use the rifle in a hunt. I know a lot of people will say it is over kill. But with proper shot placement damage will and can be held to a minimum. But I still have 5 months to decide.  :D

How does your accuracy with the C-Z compare to your Thompson center ???  Why such a big caliber in an Encore??? :D

The accuracy with the Encore was not quit as good as the CZ. It was close but I could not get it to shoot as well as the CZ. I was getting 1 1/2 to 2 inch groups with the Encore at 100 yards. The reason I went with the 416 Rigby in the Encore was, I was going on a water buffalo hunt and wanted to do it with my Encore. I chose the 416 Rigby because it was the biggest they made. If I had gone on a Grizzly hunt I would of used the 416 Rigby in the Encore also, if there are guys using bow to get the job done, why not a Encore.  :D

I got ya..  The reason I asked about 416 in an encore is that it would be a light rifle for it..  Then again not sure if it would be any lighter than a Rugar 1???  I love the CZ's though I do not have one yet.. I have been to preocupied finding a few safari express :D

What I did to tame the recoil in my Encore was, I installed a mercury recoil suppressor in a Walnut stock and installed a Simms recoil pad. Also the barrel had a muzzle tamer on it. The recoil was very manageable.

Redhawk1, Overkill on Black Bear? Maybe to the unkowing who've never tried it. I regularly use a .416 Rigby on the lowly whitetail deer, a No.1 and a CZ. My buddys primary deer rifle is a .458 Win Mag. As a handloader and bullet caster, I'm able to tailor the load to the task at hand. Lets use the .458 as an example. Once the slug leaves the barrel and is in flight to the target (Deer) What exactly is it now? A .45 cal slug. Shot from what? A 45/70. How do you know? Because we're in deer country. You come along and pull the slug out from the tree that stopped it. It's a Speer 400gr F.N. Yea, 45/70, 450 Malin, etc. Of,course your just guessing because the hunter is back at camp celbrating his havest. You stop by find out it was his and can't believe the front end is still attached to the overkilled deer. Just a .45 cal. hole in and slightly larger out. When we butcher it, its also quite pleasing to find no capillary explosion of blood shot meat to throw away. Like you would get from your "perfect deer rifle" you can decide what that is. Your .416 is .042" under what some would consider the an adequate bear rifle, the 45/70. The versatility of the over .40's is why I use it on our not as tough as African game. Of course its just plain cool too. Use it, hunt with it, and keep doing what your doing with it, enjoying it. CRASH87

So how does it shoot for you? Are you using the same loads I was using?   Did you see that T/C is making the 416 Rigby in the new Pro-hunter with a 28 inch barrel and stainless? If I did not get the CZ in 416 Rigby , I would have to get one.  :D  :-D

I've been working up loads for this Alaska Black bear trip with a 350gr Barnes TSX with IMR4831.  I cannot claim 1" groups, but almost all I have shot have been less than 1.5".  I have no doubt any black bear I see is in real trouble.

I did see the Pro-Hunter is available in 416 Rigby, but to be honest I don't think I'd want the longer barrel in this caliber, although SS would be nice - I did get one in .204 Ruger (it's a true tackdriver).

TRick, I bought the new Pro-hunter M/L. It is the complete gun with the new stock, forearm and frame and barrel. It is a very well made set up. I think I will be adding barrels for it.  :D
Not bad groups of 1 1/2 inches with them 350 gr. bullets.

Jrkrk,

If you are still interested in Redhawk1's 416 Rigby barrel, I am selling it.

I took it to SE Alaska Black Bear hunting, and on the return flight, TSA put it too close to a pistol barrel, and scratched the bottom side, about 3" from the muzzle brake.  The scratch does not effect the barrel's performance, but I'm selling it.  It's 26" with muzzle brake, and blued.  Oh, and it's a whole different "animal" than a .375H&H.

E-mail (tricketts@citlink.net) me if you're interested.

That scratch TSA put on the underside of the barrel bothers me - nothing more.  I did think about having the barrel "coated" with a Duracoat finish, or reblued.  It still is a good shooter - 1.5" group at 125 yards last Friday.  If someone wants a good deal on a .416 Rigby barrel with a slight cosmetic flaw, it's for sale, otherwise I'll probably have it Duracoated and live happily ever after.
