What is the advantage of a semi?

depends on what method of hunting you are doing. i know when we are running coyotes with dogs we usually have a variety of firearms. some guys with pump shotguns, semi auto rifles/shotguns bolt action rifles. myself i prefer the semi auto shotgun when runnin with the dogs because sometimes they come running through FAST with dogs 30-40 yards behind them so gettin off as many shots as possible is a plus.i use a 12ga charles daly semi auto, full choke and #4 buckshot and cant complain. when calling i prefer a bolt action rifle, my choice is a stevens 200 in .223.

Glanceblamm
you were wondering about close calls with coyotes.I am sure there are many storys out there by others on this forum.I have had several incedents.
I was out in the desert one morning it was my 1st set.I sat down in the sand and pushed myself back into a mesquite bush it was a larger one and part of it was over hanging my head.and was early morning the wind was slowing moving into my face and the sun was rising on my left.I was using a Johny Steward electrnic caller with a remote and was by my self.I believe the tape was vittles ala jack.and I was in full camo and my H&K 630 was wrapped in camo.I had a gillie hat on and my face was camo valed from the nose down.I keep the remote around my neck with some tuna net cord it hangs mid chest.and I use my right hand to operate it and keep my left hand under the forearm out the firearm so all I have to do is drop my hand  down to the grip as I raise the firearm and I am ready to shoot in an instant.
I started calling and coyotes started coming.one came from my right and cut and ran right by me.It was a hard shot so I let him go on by as he seemed like he didnot know were he was headed anyway.and I had seen several other coming in front of me that were easier shots for me.I started calling t o get the ones in front to move on i as I one had called once and they still needed a bearing to come to.as they were looking hard to see where dinner was.as I shut the caller off I heard something on my left and turned my head to it and a coyote was coming in the sand full speed.and when it saw my head move(guess it thought that was dinner.)and jumped into the air at my head.well.squids arn't the only ones that can blow brown stuff out their rear ends thats a fact.Things were going thru my head very fast.I thought I was going to die and I thought why did not I bring the shot gun which is what is normally on my lap and the rifle at my side.there was no way I could shoulder the rifle and shoot.no time.this was happening very fast.so my hand drop to the pistol grip and raised the barrel to the chest area and let two rip.the 1st one hit dead center in the chest.was a remington 55grpsp the coyote puffed up for a second and I could see loose hair, dirt and fleas eject off the the coyote.it stoped the charge in mid flight.he flew to the ground at my side I could touch him with the barrel of the rifle.I dumped one more into him.there were two other coyotes with this guy.he was leading the race.the other two got away.and I was done for a while.sat back and went over everthing that just happened to ensure it never happened again.I beleiev thios coyote would have had my face and head for breakfast if I had not reacted swiftly.I try and take one of those three legged chair are seat what ever they are with me now.keeps me off the ground and I can see better.
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

Kyote, I've been shooting bolts for years, why change. I see no reason for a simi auto, I've probably killed more coyotes on one stand with a bolt then 99% of guys with a simi. As it is I only own a couple rifles nowadays and one shotgun, what else do I need? I'm starting to think like an old man lol.

I have two 223 Rem. rifles. One is a Remington model 700 BDL and the other is a Rock River Arms AR-15 TASC Rifle (actually 5.56x45mm NATO but it'll shoot 223 Rem. as well). This will be my first year hunting coyotes. I probably won't use my AR this year because I don't have it set up the way I want it for any type of hunting. My model 700 has a Simmons 3-10x44mm scope on it. I'm going to replace it with a Leupold VX-II 4-12x40mm or 6-18x40mm scope before the season.

I can see the need or want for both traditional rifles and semi-auto's. One of my friends at work has a Rock River Arms AR-15 Varmint rifle with the 24 inch barrel with the 1 in 12 inch twist . The only thing he changed was the rear take down pin. He replaced it with a sex screw to tighten the upper and lower receivers up. He has a Leupold Veri-x III scope on it. He hand loads and gets 3/8 of an inch groups at 100 yards. It shoots better then his custom made model 700 in 223..........and it's A LOT faster.

I guess it all depends on your taste!  As long as you are hunting and having fun...............that's all that matters! Good luck guys!  ;)
