Sorry but I just have to get this off my chest! Has anyone used UPS to ship a gun (owner to gunsmith) before?
I just sent a Ruger Blackhawk yesterday to a custom shop and had the most interesting time dealing with UPS. I called their 1-800 customer service number and they told me just make sure it's unloaded and box it good and take it to one of their offices and request over night air shipping and adult signature required.
When I got to the UPS office with the gun, the little darling behind the counter said I needed one of "these thingy's" and shows me some other gentlemans FFL. I told her very nicely that I didn't think I did and that her own company's customer service said I didn't. When I told her this she gets a blank stare and starts looking at the tiles on the celling. I began to think maybe they keep their regulations up there. After much reflection she decided she didn't need an FFL from me, but she needed one from the Gun smith so "she knew he was a real gun smith"! By this time she had my box and my copy of the gun smiths order form so I said look no big deal If you think I need one I will just take it to a gun dealer or to Fedx. When she handed me back my order form I looked on the back while she was yapping away about her training and I saw that the gun smith had placed a reference to the appropraiate CFR for owner to smith shipments. I showed her this and she then states ok you can ship it now.
What really gets me about all this is she never once steped into the back and checked a regulation (either CFR or UPS policy). Nor did she ever once go get a more experienced person. She took it upon her self to enforce her own version of the rules (I need to know he is a real gun smith!) I just can't imagine how she thought that someones generic order form with some CFR number on it was all of a sudden legal and binding. She didn't even know what CFR stood for until I told her.
Has anyone else had this sort of thing happen or am I just the odd case!
