Barrel twist rates are listed in the FAQ and Help sticky. There are instructions on how to check twist rate and also year of mfr by serial number prefix. Most likely it's 1:12" if it was made 2005 or earlier, only the fluted .223 had a 1:9" twist in late 2005.

I just got a new Ultra .223 varmint 2 days ago and it's a 1:12 twist.

I took a cleaning rod started it about an inch down, I then marked the rod at 9" and at 12". With the marks facing me I just inserted the rod letting the rifling turn it, when the rod had made a full turn, it was the 12" mark I was looking at. So I figure that it's a 1:12 twist.

I was hoping for a 1:9 so I could use some 68 grains. It's ok though, I have a RRA varmint 20" stainless with a 1:8 twist, which will be my varmint/predator rifle and this new Ultra will be my varmint rifle.

cold one,
If you're wanting a heavier bullet in your Handi try Winchester's 64gn powerpoint.  They seem to stabilize well in 12-twist tubes.

It's gotta be one of the last 1:12" twist .223 barrels they made, W denotes 2006 build.

Cold One,

Does your barrel have an ejector or an extractor?

Extractor, it just lifts the round up and out enough to get my fingers on to pull it out.

Cold One, Thanks for your reply. I just wanted to know for future reference. Seems that there are still some 1-12's out there for 2006.

Yep, looks like it, I just shined a light down it and down my AR's (1:9 twist) and it is definitly a 1:12 twist.

No big deal, I wanted the 24" barrel for reaching out there for groundhogs and such.
Although I will have to check into those 64 grain Powerpoints.

The 63gr Sierra #1370 is supposed to be good in the 1:12" twist, also.
