Author Topic: JB Weld is Failing Me!!! (Read 1432 times)

Hello all!

I've been working on a shim for my 17 rem barrel. I get everything just right and the JB weld isn't bonding well to my shim. I roughed everything up with the dremel, I was really careful not to get any release agent where it shouldn't be and the shim pops off with little pressure, frustrating to say the least. I've tried 3 times with the same result. I have some Gorrilla glue, any thoughts on any other bonding agents?? Thanks in advance.

Matt, try warming it up with a torch, then clean it good with a degreaser, repeat a couple times, then epoxy it.

Matt,

by any chance, is your shim stock made of stainless steel? you'll have a rough time getting most glues to stick to it, i would think. it may have to be acid-etched after being sanded-on to get a glue to stick to it. stainless steel can be very tough to coat with good adhesion.

SS: Not stainless steel, it's aluminum stock

You are wasting your time with aluminium, it will flatten out nad you back to square one. Use Devcon Steel Putty. See my web site.

I also tried the JB weld on a barrel lug before, didn't work well for me either. My shim did the same thing popping out.

If JB isn't adhering to the barrel lug, you're not getting the surface of the lug clean enough, it needs to be grease and oil free and not be smooth, you'll have to rough up both surfaces to get any epoxy to adhere to it. The shim also needs to be held in place with pressure, that's why I use a C-clamp to hold it there until it's fully cured. I've never used a permanent aluminum shim though, dunno if that has anything to do with the problem.

Clean, rough and clamped are the secrets. If you know anyone with a sand blaster and aluminum oxide that should do well. As for cleaning, brake cleaner or Lye (draino powder) in water and then rinse. If you really want to do it right wear latex gloves. Hope you get it.
J.B. has fixed a lot of unfixables for me in the past. Engine blocks, stripped weed-eater head threads, etc. I've always used clear epoxies for gun stuff. Tried 5 minute stuff last time on a gunstock, it set after the wood shifted, I ended up sanding away alot of wood.

degreased with brake cleaner, roughed up with dremel and a punch, used a c-clamp and let set for 12 hours... no good... Devcon steel putty and epoxy here I come...

Yeap same here, except for 24hrs. My shim stuck, but when I went to dremel it a bit to finish the edges it popped right out. all 3 times :?

I actually took it of a broke tape measure. It was the perfect size being so thin. I heated it up and made a decent bend that took shape, and roughed it up on the side I was going to JB it to the reciever. Like I said it did stick untill I went to either -1st time..Dremel it and it flew out -2nd and 3rd..Filed it with a small file. I cleaned the area of the lug very clean and the JB actually stuck to the lug very well. Perhaps it was my bad using tape measure metal, but like I said it was the perfect size, and i was able to bend it to form easy enough.

Well, that's 2 materials that apparently don't work with JB, aluminum and tape measure stock! I've filed the heck out of the feeler gauge blades I've used to get a good tight fit, no hint of separation

picked up some JB Stik today

package says it's supposed to have 10-14,000 compressive strength. Will give it a try in the next few days and let everyone know how it turns out

In the auto section at Walmart, there is a product called Quick Steel that works very well on almost anything! Its cheap and easy to find. I have used it to bed a couple of guns and a few other odds and ends projects.
