S&W N Frame Problems

I am having bad luck with my S&W N Frames.  My 657 is back at Smith because the rectangular holes in the cylinder was deforming and rolling up a big burr.  It appears to have a timing problem.

Now my 625 Moutain gun is messed up.  When shooting it today it got to where the cylinder will not come out.  When you press the latch, the detent in the front releases and the cylinder will move a little, but the cylinder will not come out.  There is one position that you can get the cylinder to open if you work the gun to find it.  I cleaned the gun good when I got home but that did not help.  Any ideas?  I have changed the rebound spring in this gun, but have shot it a few hundred times since then without any problems.

Sounds like the common unscrewed ejector rod problem.

Try holding the cylinder while grasping the knurled portion of the ejector; turn it clockwise (I believe that all the Mountain Guns have left-hand threads on the ejectors) - it will probably unscrew. If so, you've found your problem.

The fix is to put a small drop of Loctite '222', which is a removeable version designed for fine threads, on the threaded portion of the ejector and firmly tightening with a special wrench.

Hope this helps, and do report back with your findings.

Thank you sir, it was the common unscrewed ejector rod problem.  When I was looking at it last night I thought the ejector rod was free and the back end was still latched, but I was wrong.  It was so loose I turned it quit a few times before it got tight.  Luckly I have some 222 Locktite on hand, all I need now is to find something to use for a special wrench.

You won't require a special wrench. The wrench is necessary to remove the extactor star but not the rod. The threadds are very fine and we needn't get too aggressive. Firm is good enough with the addition of the locktite..

A good trick if the cylinder can't be opened is to slip a strip of business card in around the ejector rod and then slide it up around the knurled end.  If you then pull pull the strip out the bottom it will screw the rod in enough to allow you to open the cylinder and tighten it up properly.
