.35 Remington Barrel is here!!
« on: March 14, 2006, 11:03:20 AM »
Received my .35 Remington rechambered .357 Mag barrel from Wayne yesterday, chamber looks perfect. I have brass and dies already. I slugged the bore and ordered a box of 187gr Cast Performance WFNGC from Cabelas, they're on sale for $18. Also ordered a box of 200gr Beartooth FN to try out. Wayne couldn't make the .357 mag ejector work, so I ordered a .223 ejector from Brownells to modify myself. Can't wait to get it to the range, it's gonna be fun!!

Tim you are lucky, I sent my barrel before the move, still
not back. Last contact I had with Wayne, He said in the works.
Looks like He got side tracked. Marv.

He sent me an email bill and shipped before he got my payment, but he's done business with me before, dunno what his practice is for new customers if anyone else is wondering.

Tim,

I just bought a .35 Rem 336 Marlin and it's a real hoot to shoot!  I use the same shell holder as .243, .30-06 and .308, which is quite a bit larger than a .223 shell holder.

That Beartooth bullet is a good choice!  The next bullet I think I'll try is the 358156 GC with about 15.0 gr of 2400 behind it.

Paul,  the .223 is the closest match I could come up with, it's tall enough. The '06 family rim is .473" and the .35 Rem is .460", so I don't think an '06 ejector would be quite tall enough, close enough for the shell holder to work, but probably not close enough for the ejector to work.

Paul, I dunno if you are casting your own, but I found another GCd .35 rem bullet that costs a lot less than the others I've priced, It's $17.50 shipped for 100, he charges a flat rate of $8 shipping....

Tim,

The 358156 GC is the Thompson design that Skeeter Skelton liked so much.  I already have quite a few and will probably cast some for myself when these run low.

The 250 gr LRNFP GC that Beartooth makes has done real well for me and I think they are about the same price as what you quoted.  Marshall will ship in the flat rate boxes, where you get up to 70 pounds for whatever the new price is (it used to be $7.70).

OOOPS, they're actually only $15.75/100.

This 200 gr is what they claim is a good .35 Rem bullet at $14.00/100.

I like the flat nose bullets better than a round nose bullet.

The round nose would just be for plinking since it costs less, Marshall's shipping is kinda expensive, at least it was the last time I ordered from him, he adds $2.50 handling on top of the shipping charge, seems to me my last order for the 525gr Piledrivers was close to $30 total for 1 box of 50. I asked that he use the Priority Flat rate this time, it's $8.10 now, maybe he didn't know about it last time. I quit casting a few years ago for health reasons, have too much lead in my body already, and I don't mean in my butt!!!!

Glad to hear your project is nearing completion Tim :agree: .
You've been excited at the idea for awhile now  and I don't blame you. A 35 in the library is a good choice.
Good shoot'n to ya buddy, I look forward to hearing your report.

The .223 ejector works great, it didn't take much modification with the dremel at all, just a little contouring and it was done!!

Ran into a problem, it's my fault though cuz I originally wanted to shoot the 180gr SSP bullet, but after switching horses and not letting Wayne know what I wanted to shoot other than 180-200gr bullets, I ended up with a throat too short for the 180gr-200gr FN cast bullets. The throat is perfect for the SSP, but I'm afraid that bullet won't handle the velocity, there's a thread in the TC Handgun forum, starting out at 1600fps in a .357 Max TC, it was almost used up on a deer at 60yds, so starting out at over 2000fps in a Handi, it's not gonna work well at all. So, instead of spending $30+ and more time for shipping back to Wayne(and risking loosing it in the mail!!), I'm renting a thoating reamer for $20 shipped to throat it myself so it comes out exactly the way I want it for the 200gr Beartooth bullet.

If it's not one thing, it's something else!!!

I reloaded for a 336 in 35 rem for some time and the listed loads are very light. I loaded up with 3031 with a slightly over max load with sierra 200 grn bullets. It was an honest 200 yards rifle. I dont know what the velocity was but the loads got more accurate the closer I got to max load. It was the " hammer of god" on white tail. I also tried 158 grn cast pistol bullets in it and they were lots of fun out to about 70 yards or so. It seemed that that rifle caliber combo would eat anything I put down its pipe. I hope yours does the same.

Sincerely,

AL
