I started out with a new M760 in 1957. It has worn three different scopes. A cheap early Japenese scope, a K4 Weaver, and a 3x9 Busnell Banner. The Banner has been on it a lot of years and has not failed me. It has held up under very rough conditions.
In fact I purchased another Banner 3x9 with BDC for another rifle. I took a hard fall down a steep, rocky hill covered with ice and snow. Luckly the only damage was to the scope. I bent the top turret. I sent the scope to Busnell for repair. I expected to pay for the repair or a replacement scope. Busnell returned the repaired scope with some goodies to me at no cost. Outstanding service.
While some people turn their nose in the air when looking at the Banner I have found them to be a good value. I have a couple of the latest Weaver scopes on rifles, and an older 2.5x7 Weaver on another. They are good scopes, but the do not offer me any better value then the Banner.
Bushnell has moved its' product line around a little but my opinion is based on a lot of hours pounding feet in the woods. I think there are a number of good scopes out there. Part of the key is matching the scope to the pocket book. The first scope I had was junk and it is still in my junk collection. Be aware of unbranded scopes found in some discount stores. I had one given to me as a gift. A few shots from a low recoiling .270 and the cross hair broke. Garbage and more costly was the waste of time.
http://theopticzone.com/searchresult.aspx?CategoryID=38Mounts: If your rifle currently has Weaver mounts you can reuse your current mounts unless you get a scope with a bell over 40MM. If you do the Weaver bases should be okay and just buy tall Weaver rings. Weaver sells low, medium a high rings. I would stay with the 40MM scope because it fits the profile and fit of the M760. I have shot a number of bucks at close range with the 760. The 760 is a natural in heavy cover, snap shooting situation. If you mount a large scope up high on the 760 you lose that advantage. In sure the base screws are tight. I like using Loctite for guns on all scope mounting screws. In the passed I have used blue loctite but purple maybe better.
