Has anyone ever loaded a 22cal bullet in a 30 caliber sabot? I was just wondering if it is practical for varmint hunting with an "06".

The "Accelerator" rounds came out a long time ago. Most of the shooters I know tried them and were as unhappy with them as I was. They produce groups like a shotgun - not like a rifle. Sabot rounds have very special requirements to be accurate. Those who own rifles with short, tight throats and slow rates of twist might be able to shoot sabot rounds but until the technology of sabots and the bullets they use catches up with the desire to shoot a very light weight sub-caliber bullet at hyper-sonic velocities I'll just stick to shooting the bullets that the rifle was designed to shoot at the velocities that actually meet the criteria of my uses.

Why do they continue to exist if they're so bad? I've only heard and read bad things about them. Are they still available as factory ammo?

They exist for the same reason black powder does. People spend MONEY on them! A few rifles will shoot them into the same group sizes that can be shot with regular bullets .Very few can reach the accuracy needed for serious long range varminting(sub MOA). I found it more satisfing to shoot ground hogs with 150 grain 30-06 bullets then shoot AT them with a 55 grain saboted 22 slug!

????? Is That a compliment or not Reed? In one 30-30 the saboted slugs were WILDLY inaccurate,in another they would group 5 shots in 8 to 10 inches at 100 yards. Several 30-06 rifles and also a MATCH grade 308 could hit a 2 liter soda bottle at 200 yards.Those same bullets loaded in22 cf rifles generally went an inch or less 5 shots@ 100 yards. I've found cast bullets to be more accurate AND more usefull at the PRACTICAL rages of the saboted things  Just MY experience! HEY ! I'm the guy who is ALWAYS trying to reinvent the wheel.

I believe there may be some large differences but I do use sidelocks with patched balls.

Now..back to them Say-Bo's....I have had them shoot very well in the .30-30 but poorly in the 06.
