in the middle of the map - that's your house. All the little colored
boxes are registered Sex Offenders. Click on them and you get a name,
address & picture
of the person along with his crime, and it shows you where they live in
proximity to your home and the local schools.

Just like all other programs I've seen that are supposed to locate my house it could not. I think it's because my address is outside the city from which my mail comes. That blows the mind of every mapping program I've ever tried to use. Even the Post Office which assigned me the address balks when I try to order supplies online. :eek:

It couldn't find my house when I typed "county road". When I used the abreviated form "CR" it found my address.

Heck Greybeard.....Alabama isn't known for marking it roads......I did service repair work in Alabama back in the early 90's and had all of north Alabama in my territory. I decided to take a short cut one day but the road wasn't marked and I didn't know it until I reached the next small town. I turned around and found the road but there wasn't a road sign........that wouldn't happen today with GPS.....

I kind of thought that the locals figured if you wasn't from around there you didn't need to be there in the first place!

I always kid that if the Russians invaded Alabama they'ld never find their way around!

I did finally manage a way to get to my house on the map. I had to put in a name of a nearby community, it's not really an incorporated city but it did show up on the map when I entered it. I then manipulated the controls east-west-north-south to get me to my house. I also expanded the view as there were none in the closer views. I had to expand it out a ways to find them. I think the closest was about 3 miles away and man he's an ugly dude. :eek:

When I got to the address I used North Pole even thou I live a mile outside of the city limits. Worked good gave my house right where it is supposed to be. Shows seven people living around me. None real close, all several miles from my house. Checked them out and I am familure with five of the seven. Means I see them around town, or know them from where they work. One is a good friend. His convection was a mistake on his part and should have been overturned by the court. He never did what he was accused of, he took the conviction to end a bad marriage and get out of a severly deteriating position. All his friends know what happened and that is all he cares about. In our small community, if someone sees his name on the list, when they mention it to a local they are quickly straightened out.

This system is good, BUT it has it's flaws.

The second red dot I clicked on near my home brought up someone that I have been working with, an has been asking to work with a youth group through a civic organization we both work with. I will be on this like a duck on a June bug at first light. The first thing I will ask his is to resign, if he refuses, the it will be a SHTF situation

When confronted, he sheepishly admitted it, but was reluctant to resign. In his mind, since he had been convicted, received a large fine, and extended probation, which he had already served, his obligation to society was completed.

I gave him the option of resigning from the organization quietly, or having his case reviewed by the board, and voted on by the members. He wasn't pleased, but thought it best to walk away.

Again, Thanks! It is amazing how his ace popped up so unexpectedly. Someone must have been looking out for the children he would have been in contact with.

I plan to have a complete LEO background investigation done on all of our volunteers to prevent something like this in the future.

I know I'm very much in the minority in my opinion on this matter but then that's nothing new as I seem to hold the minority opinion on most matters these days. I just don't for the life of me understand the big no HUGE deal made of this.

As I understand the US Constitution once a debt to society is paid following a crime the person is supposed to be "made whole again" and once again considered and treated as a normal functioning member of society so long as they act like one and do not again commit crimes. Why we pick one particular type crime to make such an issue of an to forever more ruin a person's life over I just can't comprehend. If I were gonna make such an issue it would more likely be over murder than this.

Besides you can get branded as a "sex criminal" for so many little bitty things that most wouldn't even make an issue of not just the bigger things. If we feel the crime is so horrible and deserves such harsh treatment then change the penalty don't keep punishing after the penalty has been completed. If life in prison is what we feel is justified for any and all sex crimes then so be it change the law to do that and I'd have no problem with it. But once we set a penalty for ANY crime that penalty should be the extend of it. Punish to the extent of the law and let the punishment fit the crime but then leave them alone unless and until they again break the law.

If we as society feel the crime only justifies say five or ten years on first offense with perhaps some parole conditions for some number of years to follow which is the way all other crimes are treated then so be it. Do that and leave the person alone to live a normal life unless and until they commit another crime. Then if it's the same crime which supposedly is what this is all about is some liberal physcologist thinks sex criminals are so much more prone to do the same again than any other type criminal is (a theory I don't happen to buy into by the way) put the sucker away for life or just kill him and save society the expense of caring for them forever. I'd accept either option and say the punishment fits the crime. I'd even go along with it for the first offense if that's what we as society want and get the laws changed to agree with it.

But dang it the way they are treated sure makes their life almost impossible from that time on and to my thinking just angers them into repeating more so than if left to live a normal life. The entire new law passed to keep on punishing them forever after they've served their time is just plain unconstitutional and without the liberal judges now running this country would have been judged so already.

Put them away for life or kill them if you feel they can never ever again be a productive part of society do tell them they've paid their "debt to society" and then keep on punishing them until they die.

I understand where Rockbilly is coming from, but people make mistakes and should be able to be given the chance to redeem themselves. It would depend a lot on the particular crime, circumstances, and age of the person that committed the crime. I've known several folks that were once young and stupid and have felony convictions. This of course means they can not own or posess a gun, even for self defense, even though they've led exemplary live for 20-30 years now. If it were my child in question with one of these convicted perverts, I might not feel so comfortable about allowing them to be around folks like that, I'd definitely have reservations. Which TYPE of pervert? Me thinks there are a LOT of different types out there. As far as your children's safety is concerned someone who has raped an adult woman is a lot less likely to be a threat to them than someone selling drugs is. Only those who have shown a propensity to have sexual fantasy of children should be of concern and just because they did it once and were punished doesn't mean they will again.

I just think we're losing sight of the forest for the trees and making such an issue over one thing that in most cases really there is no cause for it and making the life of those folks such that it drives them to crime when they might not if left alone after paying the debt. There are too many others I'd be more concerned about personally than them.

We are constantly turning murderers loose with little time served and no such watchful eye on them. Same for drug dealers and robbers and such. Sorry I just don't get it.

Oh my goodness Graybeard! I am embarrassed to say that I never dreamed in a million years that you would write the above posts. I'm sorry for doubting you and I'm so happy to see you standing up for what you believe in given the touchy topic of this thread.

Like Powderman has experienced, I too know a person who screwed up in his late teens and is now on one of those sexual predator lists for life. He did his time and in my opinion paid his dues to society but he will be paying for the rest of his life because of a stupid mistake made when he was very young.

He can not own a firearm but his greatest love in life was hunting with a revolver. His crime did not involve a gun. He is no longer a threat to the community. He is a hard working, productive member of society, but he has been branded for life and is still paying, paying, paying.

Here is where common sense has left the playing field. No doubt many people convicted of crimes, if circumstance's were known, are probably guilty of just being stupid at the wrong time. If a man steps 2 rows into a corn field to get rid of a couple cups of coffee, guilty of exposing himself, the same as if he were standing in an alley with nothing on under a trench coat. Not in my book, but I'm sure, somewhere, somebody probably got charged for that. Been in a couple bar fights almost 3 decade's ago, nobody got much more than black eye's or bruised ribs and ego's. But I'm sure something could have been made out of it. Now I feel almost as bad getting out of bed in the morning, and don't have a reason for the aches. -gypsyman

pedophilia seems to be more ofan orientation than a one time thing. a pedophile gets sexual gratification from children and that is too powerful to change. i guess parents are just worried that their children are at risk if it turns out that teh person will act on his (or her!) fantasies again. if you have a convictred predator living in your neighborhood, you don;t even feel like you can let your kids go outside to play without worrying. the scary thing is, the predator you know about is one thing the predator who hasn't been caught yet is even worse!

It has been proven, people who commit sexual crimes against children are usually, not all the time, habitual offenders. How many times have you seen in the news of a person being arrested for a 2nd or 3rd offense? It was because the court system was too lenient with them the first time. All i can say is if anyone ever hurts my children in this way, they wont have to worry with the law. Ill take care of it. And if i go to jail for it, oh well, the ultimate judgement will be from God. If he felt that me taking care of mine was punishible by life in hell, well i guess i better pack an air conditioner.

There are exceptions to the rule though. I have a neighbor who was 20 at the time of his conviction. He was in a bar and picked up a girl who was in the bar drinking. After she woke up in his bed the next morning she went to hollering rape. And guess what ? It turned out she was 16......in a bar....buying her own alcohol. So who was more in the wrong here? Should he have done a complete background check on her first?

A local gal got popped for flashing her boobies at a concert here 15 yrs ago. Apparently some 16 yr old who saw it told mommy who then pressed charges. This is a great gal who is now marked for life for some silly stunt she pulled when she was barely legal.
Yeah, she's listed on that site. It would be nice if they could differentiate between harmless and potentially dangerous.

We were stationed in Maryland and had just bought a house. About three weeks later, a deputy sheriff knocked on the door. He was looking for registered sex offender that had lived in the house before we bought it from his mother. After one look at me he was pretty sure he had the wrong guy. I'm 6', 240, 38 yo then and white. The other guy was 5'8", 150, 25 and black... so any I show him my id and our contract where we had just bought the house. He said he would report that info so we wouldn't be bothered again. Right... about 3 weeks later at 0300 someone starts beating the crap out of our door. So I grab my .45 and my wife rolls over and grabs the AR-15. Our SOP is I go to the door, she is at the end of the hall blocking access to the sleeping areas. About the time I hit the front room the guy at the front door hits the ground! Turns out his partner was in the back and could see in the dining room door (we hadn't put up a curtain yet). He radiod "Gun!" so the front door guy (big window to see throught) hit the ground. They we bounty hunters looking for the same guy! I see a hand come up with a badge in it. So I ease up to the window and then there's this mexican standoff as his buddy comes around the corner of the house. We have a few words and then they come into talk. They were a little worried about me coming to the door with a .45 but I said "hell it's 3AM and you're beating the hell of my door... you think I'm going to come to the door with a cup of coffee?" Of course their eyes really got big when the wife comes out with the AR... not even sure if it was legal there or not but they didn't say anything and eventually went their own way. Ran into one of them a few weeks later at a store and we got to talking and he said that he was pretty certain we were going to have a gun-fight that night. He said he about crapped himself when my little 5'2" 120 wife came out of the hall with an AR, dual 30's and a flashlight on it though... Funny now but not then...

I looked up on my states site, had my kids with me, we looked at all 47 in our town (pop 3600)
next town's away one had 12 the other 7 and another 5
problem is ther's more out there than whats recorded on the sight.
Seen one fella lately in town that did some time for having a way underaged girl friend he wasent in there, wasent even in the system!
