NIKON MONARCH OR WEAVER GRAND SLAM
« on: March 17, 2006, 11:55:31 AM »
If you had your choice between a Weaver GrandSlam 3-10x40 or a Nikon Monarch 3-10x40 witch is better and why ? it will go on a Tikka T-3 hunter in .243 . I know more expensive glass with etched rectile's are better, but i put a Grand slam on a Styer pro hunter in .376 Styer and it has worked great for 4 years and 300+ shots with no problem and stays zeroed .I have herd the Nikon is very good also .I can get either for $250.00. I will use it for deer and antilope . :?

I know this will probably not help you, but I would take the Nikon Monarch due to cosmetic looks.  The Weaver GS optically is an outstanding scope like the Nikon, but I just don't like the big rubber power ring.

I would go with the Grand Slam. I like the looks of the large rubber ring, it's just a different look. I have one on my Tikka t3 and it's been a great scope. The big rubber adjustment ring turns easily with heavy winter gloves on. The fast focus eyepiece is awesome to. I personally think the GS is a more rugged (tuffer) scope than the Nikon. Both are great scopes and would serve you well on your .243. I do give the GS the durability edge though. ( :D JUST my opinion :D )

I own several Monarchs, and for many good reasons.

Get the Monarch.

Optics are made to look THROUGH, not AT.

Why don't you look through both and see what you think?

I've owned both, and I would say the Grand Slam.  Currently have a 4.5-14 GS on one of my .308 bolt guns, and the glass is excellent

You must like scopes with little eye relief if you picked the GS

The Weaver Grandslam has an eye relief of 3"/3.5" according to Weaver's website. I'd guess the 3" would be when your using the 10 power setting.
The Nikon Monarch 3-9x40 UCC has an eye relief of 3.5"/3.6" this is .1" better accoring to Nikon's website. The 3.3-10x44 Monacrh has 3.6" of eye relief. The 4-12 x40 has 3.4"/3.6" of eye relief. I listed three different models because I don't see a 3-10x40 in the Monarch line.
The Elite 4200 riflescopes have 3.3" of eye relief according to Bushnell.
Now theese figures seem very close to me.
I know the Ziess Conquest offers 4" of consistant eye relief.
I have the 3-10 x40 Grandslam on my (.30-06) Tikka-t3 which is a lightweight rifle and I have never been clipped. I also have Butler Creek flip-ups which lessen the eye relief a tad bit.
BUSTER51 is using this scope on a .243 so he will be fine.

Marylandeer, if it had at least a constant 3.5 It would not be a problem and I would seriously look at one.  I won't buy a scope that doesn't have 3.5 eye relief .   I have been shooting scoped rifles for 40 years in all shapes and forms.. Another negative is the eyepiece which makes things tight around the bolt with low rings... Unless you have a Sako or Tiika,Weatherby MK V it could be a problem.

I have the 1.5x5 GS on a Marlin 1895M (.450 Marlin).  It is a fairly heavy recoiling rifle, but the GS eye relief has never been a problem.  It comes pretty close, but its never hit me.

Can't comment on the Grand Slam, but the Monarch is the cat's "you know what".  I have one in 3-9X40 and it's great.  Bright, clear, ample eye relief(for me), reticle is perfect size. Just cannot say enough good about it.

Grandslam  on the Tikka T3 hunter (.243) works like a dream 3/4 inch moa at 100 yards / 1 inch moa at 200 yards off a sand bag with Winchester supream balistic tip 95 grain. not bad for an old man with factory ammo .on sunday i'll see how the cyotes like it .  :-D  :-D

knock-em-down BUSTER. I don't think them cyotes are going to like that rig at all. I'll tell you one thing, the deer don't like my Grandslam / Ttikka combo. That old .30-06 just breaks their hearts.
