Encore Turkey Barrel shot size..?????
« on: March 25, 2003, 11:20:19 AM »
A friend bought a Encore 12ga. turkey barrel with their turkey choke. He tried Winchester 3" #4 and #5. Wont pattern very well.  Those of you that have them what brand and size shot patterns best? Are the barrels threaded to use anyone else chokes, like Win or Rem? Thanks to those who reply, mike

Mike I can't answer on the choke tube question as I dont have an Encore, but on the brand and size of shot I'll say that you will have to let the gun tell you what it likes. I know this is not really what you are looking for but that is usually the way it is. Several years ago the Remington 3" #6's patterned best in the 870 I had at the time. I ran out and went to buy more. Well the shells I had been using were the ones in the camo box and I could not find them. More than one dealer called Remington and ask about this for me and they were told that only the box had changed and the shells were the same. I bought some and went to the pattern board and shot. These "same" shells left holes in the pattern at 30yds big enough to miss a grapefruit. That is why I would not now go hunting with loads that I had not patterned personally. If you are just looking for something else to try then I would say that you should try some Remington and some Federal and dont leave out the #6 shot. Some say #6s dont carry enough energy farther down range but if I told you the longest  killing shot I made with those original Remington #6s you would not belive me. (let me just say on that shot because of the angle I had to turn I misjudged the yardage badly and would not have shot otherwise).
I hope all this rambling has helped a little anyway

Winchester, Browning invector and Mossberg 500 will fit according to T/C.  I know I gave a Browning choke to a friend and it worked.

Don't forget to try HeviShot as one of your ammo types.  Has the reputation for very tight patterns, so you may not want to use the turkey choke but maybe something more open.

Glad to hear these barrels take a standard Invector choke.  I have a Citori that uses the standard Invectors, so if I end up with one of the T/C Encore barrels I'll be all set.  A friend's Stoeger shotgun used the Invectors, too.

talked to my friend and he shot 8 rounds of 3" winchesters thru the gun trying to pattern it. his shoulders is so sore he can hardly move his arm. the gun is very light and as he put it " kicks like a Missouri mule". Its a nice outfit and light to carry. Wouldnt notice the recoil hunting but patterning it is going to take a few days. mike

Mike what my cousin and I do when we have a hard kicker to pattern is to work together and to rotate every two shots. That way we dont start pulling our shots and making it look as if the pattern is not centered when it really may be. It saves on both our shoulders which is good because I have a 3 1/2" 12ga that we need to pattern now.
