one of my favorite things to do is shoot jack rabbits. gun of choice....ruger m77 mkII in 300 win mag. its so much fun watching them fly up in the air in pieces that i think next time i go im going to bring the camcorder. anybody ever shoot em with a bigger bullet if so id like to here about it. the other thing ive been thinking about doing is buying one of those gatling gun kits that use the ruger 10/22 barrels and mounting it on the bed of my pick up(my wife isnt to crazy about this idea). oh i cant wait till i get my tax return! them rabbits are in serious trouble this summer.

No, I've never killed one with a .300 but killed a bunch with a .22lr ruger single six pistol.  Not near as spectacular, but very challengeing.  No Jacks around here but that was my favorite past time as a young man stationed at Ft. Bliss TX.

thats to bad about not having any jack rabbits victor. i live out here in central oregon and if you drive out to the sage brush you can find tons of em. i like finding a place with lots of large rocks and sage brush, then i find some place to sit, usually some place higher then the rabbits. then i wait for them to come out. funny thing about rabbits is you can shoot one to pieces and a min later his buddy is toolin around waitin to get blasted.
i shot one with the 300 one time and it flew up in the air a good 20 feet in chunks, and when i looked through my scope to find all the pieces and i saw another one not 15 feet from where i shot the first one.....yea he got smoked   . one of these days i wanna try and shoot one with my new 45. all ive killed with that is a couple cans of cream corn....and yes the corn got alot creamier 8)

Ahhhh, someone is showing real firearm owner responsibility and maturity aren't they.  Certainly giving the firearnms owner and hunters alike a wonderful image for others.  As was said in another of your threads...time to grow up!   You're NOT impressing anyone.  :noway:

Out west Jack rabbits are not held in high regard and are considered by most as varmits.  No different than shooting a praire dog.  Sorry you don't like it but a lot of people do.

blkhwk73....i dont know what your problem is with me shooting rabbits with high powered weapons but sorry to say it has no reflection on my maturity. we are talking about jack rabbits....in oregon they are considered predatory animals(which id like to add there are no weapon restrictions on said animals) because of the damage they do to crops....if you want to go hunting with me sometime ill make sure you can shoot them with a small caliber rifle...one time....and you can take them home and eat them or do whatever it is you want with them. but me....im going to shoot them with either alot of bullets or one great big one and im not going to feel bad about it. and as for me being a bad image for hunters and firearms owners. that is not my concern....if someone views me as a bad person for killing rabbits....they are probally some hippy tree hugger anyway and they would have the same opinion either way.  i grew up on a farm where to get rid of VARMINTS such as rabbits or ground squirrels you pour gasoline down there holes and burn them to death. which would you view as a more humane death for a rabbit or squirrel....getting burned to death or being turned inside out and into pieces with a high powered rifle.

sincerly,

Here in Utah Jackrabbits are an unprotected species and are generally very unhealthy. Carry lots of diseases and are considered vermin.

I'm with tapehoser, the jack rabbits here in Utah do have a lot of diseases and some populations and a large population can be get out of hand spread disease and wipe out the remaining rabbit.

yup its the same here in oregon....which is why i kill every jack rabbit i see. mangulator and nonya....what are your views on shooting jack rabbits with a gatling gun....cruel and unusual.....or a good way to spend a sunday afternoon after church. the reason im asking is because people are calling me immature for wanting to do this....i think it would be a great time. im still having a hard time seeing how this would give a negative image of gun owners and hunters....i would think people in here would be ok with it....greybeard did say that there is no excuse for missing faster but what if it were possible to mount a scope on it. and remember this gatling gun is capable of single shots....its 4 shots for every revolution of the crank. sounds pretty good to me.

I remember not to long ago the jack rabbits in Idaho got out of hand and some of the ranchers would do a rabbit drives and have the feilds surrounded by individuals with bats and when the rabbits tried to get out of the circle the bat swinging ranchers would give them a good wack. Yes this sounds crude but effective. I have also heard of rabbits being smoked out of their holes. So if you are shooting a few to control the population, I do not have a problem. I hate to see animals starving to death because housing developments do not allow hunting in certain areas.

I also, want to say what is the difference in someone shooting a yote, fox, gound squirrel, crow, starling, pigeon, sparrows do you expect those individuals that shot those animals to eat them.... wasting protected game animals is shameful some species are not protected.

out here in the west jack rabbits are vermin..and Ft bilss is still loaded with them VC.the impact areas have lots.I enjoy shooting them with my .220 swift AI the 40 gr bullets at the high speed is like the 300 hittin em I reckon.and my buddys the filthy coyotes thank me later on in the winter months by coming to me when I call em.I can hit them with a pistol also.but not the blow up I like..
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

I won't hunt them with any thing smaller than a 458 win mag. The only thing worse than an enraged Cape Buffalo is an enraged Jack Rabbit! I am considering trying them with a 375 Holland & Holland, with a guide backing me up of course. ;)

I've shot a few with a 30-06, does a very good job!!! ;D  Used to hunt them at longer ranges than a 22 would be useful at.  :P
Maakes for good practice fordeer hunting. I've also shot coyotes with the 30-06, slams them right down!!! ::)  Do't use the 30-06 much any more, use handguns more now!!! :)

Why are fellow hunters looking down on others that chose to eliminate jackrabbits that are a nuissance in some areas?

Ive shot a few with a .300rum out to 600 yards and its quite a site. How is this different than getting rid of groundhogs on farms? Its not, and is that looked at as immature as well?

I don't have a problem with anyone killing jacks, their populatins get way out of control in many areas. We blast them with everything from a 17mach2 to a 6.5x55 with v-max bullet. The handload v-maxs really splat a jack rabbit. The only thing I worry about is when guys use big game bullets and go blasting across the prarie. That is a recipe for an accident. With varmint bullet and the big game calibers they just blow up and do quite a number on varmints like jacks and coyotes.
If a jack rabbit is clean of disease, they are not bad eating either. I have actually eaten some that are better than cottontails, especially the white tailed jack rabbits up in oregon and in northern California. The black tails down here in southern cal are usually full of big nasty ticks, but sometime they are clean and are good eating.

Good shooting,
Brian

well i figure if i can hit a jack rabbit from 3 to 4 hundred yards out with the mag, i should be pretty good for elk season. and as far as making a big splat i do enjoy it. its fun and more humane then shooting them with a smaller bullet and having to shoot twice .

Now that I'll buy! They are great practice with a centerfire and there's ton's around. Over in Culver year's ago I'm told they used to have roundup's for them with clubs. Story goes that they would get thousands at a time with the clube, shooting sounds much more humane and a lot more fun!

Need to think a bit. We used to go out toward Burns years ago and there were ton's of them. Grasslands toward Madras looks good but not many there really. I'll think on it and get back to you with a PM.
