power control and magnaported
« on: March 20, 2006, 08:37:42 AM »
I have seen the barrrels on DW that have a mussel ports, like the Alaskan
model .445 super mag and i wondered if anyone ever had a dw magnaported.  This would seem complex since the barrel and schrod would need to be machined.

I have a sweet DW .44mag with a 10 barrel tuned trigger scoped, and I was thinking about haveing a gunsmith install swivels or rings so I  can mount a sling on it and not have to deal with getting a large holster.

Dan Wesson tried a version of porting they called "power ports", but it was not really very effective as a porting system and wreaked havoc with the barrel changing system.  NOT RECOMMENDED!!  The compensated barrel system they use now on the other hand works GREAT, and you can probably buy a new compensated barrel from Dan Wesson CHEAPER than you can have a Dan Wesson Magnaported.  That is just another advantage of the Dan Wesson system.  If they come out with an innovative barrel system, you don't have to purchase an entire new gun to take advantage of it.

Rolltide,
I'm sure that I'm not the first.  Why not just made an extended barrel nut and port it.  It just seems so easy.?

I think one of the old DW companies (Palmer era?) experimented with the idea of the large ported barrel nut. I remember reading a write up on it in a gun rag. I don't think it reached production before they closed the doors.

that is what I am attempting to make right now with the help of my Brother who is a gunsmith. As soon as I get it, I will post some pictures and my impressions. I am adding it to a 44 Mag 8" barrel.

Saw a number of S&W Performance center pistols at a gun show this weekend, all have a threaded comp.
