Anybody loading corelokt bullets?

Corelokts have a reputation for excellent performance on game and they are dirt cheap compared to most other bullets. How do they do in the accuracy department?

I picked up a bunch of 165gr 308s and they have been working good.

I load them in four calibers, .243, .277, .284, and .308.

They are a good deer and black bear bullet.  They are surprisingly good in the accuracy department.  Years back I was very unhappy with the accuracy of my then new Ruger in 7 Remington mag.  I had tried Remington, Winchester, and Federal factory ammo in it and they proved to be inaccurate in that rifle.  I found that I had a keeper when I loaded the Remington bullet in front of H4831.

In 30-30 factory ammunition I have found the Remington Corelokt to be the most accurate in my rifle.  After testing the big three brands.

In .277 the 130 grain and the 150 grain have proved themselve to be accurate.

I believe that a powder that comes close to filling the case is a very important ingredient in the accuracy game.  I suspect that many times in the distant pass factories selected powders that would flow in automatic loading machines.  As a kid we would do the old shake test on a loaded cartridge.  It was clear that most loads did not come close to filling the case.  Reviewing Nosler Reloading Manual # three and an old Lyman manual most listed accuracy loads come close to filling the case.

I operate on the theory of safety first, review  a number of manuals for the slowest burning powder that gives tops performance in a case, and then develope a load.  Normally the slowest burning powder will occupy more space in the case.  I have loaded Corelokts along side other brand bullets and found that they shot in the same group at 100 yards.

The greatest variance I have found in factory bullets was with the old Remington Bronze Pt. in .277.  The variance exceeded 2 grains.

The "old" or the orginal .277 140 grain WW Silvertip bullet is very accurate.   Test weight of a number of bullets was 140 grains on the button.  The first time I fired this bullet at the range I could not spot one round with the spotting scope.  I found it in the very small 3/8 group.  Again the powder charge came close to the case neck.  I do not know how this bullet will react on a deer.

One of the most accurate bulets in my 270WSM are the 130gr Core-lokts. Best group I ever fired was .25" with them. Unfortunately I'm a litte hesitant to shoot them at game due to the high speed and construction type of the Core-lokt. (I hunt in areas where I can hunt elk and moose at the same time I'm hunting deer).

I use the Hornady, and Remington corelokt in the .30-30 and the 8x57. They are good accurate deer bullets.

Cappy:  I have to agree with you.  The extra couple hundred fps you get out of your WSM may push the design limits of a 130 grain .277 core-lokt on game withing 100 yards.

I love the Remmy Core Locs, use them in my 300WBY, 308, 223 and my sons 7mm-08 all with great accuracy.

I use other bullets also but I use the core loc and the standard to go buy, accuracy is hard to beat.
Sounds silly for a MASS produced bullet to be so dam accurate.

I use the same 150 g bullet of both my 06 and my 308 with good results.  Took two ‘dead in their tracks’ deer with the 308 this year.  They probably shoot a lot better than I do so I am very satisfied with them. :-)

I have several thousand in my reloading room.  Got in 1000 in 6mm last night.  I use them for lots of my hunting loads.  I use them in the heavier guns to work up a load and then use the data for my Nosler Partition loads.  They shoot similar speed and point of aim.  For any one caliber in my hunting loads you may find a box (100) of the core-loct and a box of the partitions.  I use the partitions for longer range due to reputation more than anything.  Of the large game I have taken and competition shooting I have done, more Remington bullets than all others combined.

Thanks for the good information. Two veteran outfitters have told me the corelokt is the most effective game bullet in their experience. Guess I'll try some. I agree on the compressed loads using slow powders. I'm using a very accurate compressed load of 7828 in my .243 and am planning to try 7828 in my .270. The exception is my 30-06 - I can't find a better performing powder for the old girl than H4350.

Like everyonr here I have found the Core Lokts to be very accurate. I shoot 130's out of my 270 and have gotten my best results with IMR 4831 and IMR 4350 as a close second...Jim
