Which lube to get
« on: March 23, 2006, 08:53:19 AM »
Veral,
I am looking for a new lube to use for my rifle and pistol loading.  I shoot silhouette competition and shoot a lot of cast bullets.  The biggest problem I have is with the revolvers.  Dan Wesson 357SM and a Freedom Arms 41mag in that it is very smokey and leaves the gun very dirty on the outside of the cylinder from all the smoke and using a blast shield when shooting freestyle.  The current lube I am using is from a bulk supply I bought years (probably 15years).  It is tamarack high temp rifle bullet lube (alox bees wax I am assuming).  I have been reading your web site and really like the things said about you "blue"  line.  My question is which would be best for all applications.  I am leaning toward the soft blue.  I do not box my bullets when sized but rather set them on their bases in trays prior to loading.
Also, do the hollow and solid stick contain the same ounces of lube.  My sizers are RCBS and the hollow sticks would be the easiest.
Thanks in advance.
Bret

Blue soft performs ballistically for anything, and works in any sizer with the widest temperature extreem, without a heater.  You don't box your bullets, but you can with blue soft, or carry a lubed bullet in your pocket for weeks and have the lube stay intact, though it will pick up lint and dirt from your pocket.

All lube sticks labeled 1X4, from all manufactures are quite close to those dimensions, which is mandatory to get them into all brands of sizers which are standardized.  So the hollow sticks will give you about 10% less lube.  Also, because the sticks have to be a little smaller than the lubrisizer lube chamber so they can be slipped in, there will be a little gap around.  If economy is important, and if you want to put the maximum amount of lube into your sizer, to save the time and mess of unscrewing the pressure screw etc.  Purchase solid sticks, melt them on an automatic coffee maker hot plate, which has the tempature controled to just under boiling, which means it cannot overheat the lube smoke or fire.  Pour in the maximum amount allowable, put the pistion in and go to sizing.  You'll never know it is filled with melted lube.  It will flow like you inserted a solid stick.

Veral,
That is the way I have been using the current supply of bulk lube.  It came in 1 pound tubs and I just melted it in the microwave watching until is just started turning liquid and then would pour off the liquid into the lubrisizer.  This way I could completely fill the lubrisizer and it would last longer between fillings.

Will the blue soft melt in the microwave or is it better to use the burner of a coffee maker?
Thanks,
Bret

Melt it any way you please.  Just watch it like you do so it doesn't overheat and cause a fire.  Melting for long period, or melting and cooling won't hurt it.
