Hevi-shot vs Fed flite control wad.
« on: March 24, 2006, 05:36:05 AM »
Yesterday I did some patterning with my 12ga mossberg 500 26'' VR barrel it has adjustable fiberoptic sights.  Using 3'' no 6's 1.75 ounce loads both copper plated. Compared the new flite control and win supreme through a undertaker .665 choke at 40yds shooting at a 8'' circle on a 2' by 1.5' posterboard. Shot 2 shots each at different boards and counted shot in circle. Winchester had 59 & 61  Fed flite control 72 & 78. Then tried Rem hevi-shot 3'' no. 6  1.75 ounce through undertaker HS .705 choke got 69 & 75.  Then shot 1 each of the win and fed through the .705 choke got 48 win & 70 fed so opening the choke didnt seem to affect the fed as much as the win. I wanted to try the new Fed Mag•Shok™ HEAVYWEIGHT™ With FLITECONTROL™ Turkey Loads but they were out. I have no dout that load would out proform the rem hevi-shot based on these results. The flite control seems to do as advertized. Just wanted to share.  :D

Thanks Coop, some very good information. I wish I could get that Flite Control wad to try in my front stuffer. The Turkey loads have come a long way over the last couple of years.

I did some load patterning yesterday with 3½"-#6-2oz Flight Control and 3½"-#6 1-7/8oz Rem hevi-shot which I've been shooting for several yrs in my 835 w/Mad Super Max Hevi shot tube. At 40yds, the Flight Control wad landed just 3' short or the target, shot density was barely acceptable, but the Rem load was what appears to be about twice as dense, enough so to plainly see there's no comparison with 6 brain and spine hits compared to 13 with the Hevi-shot, so it doesn't work well in my gun/choke. Next time I'll take some of my other chokes with me to check it out further.  I was looking for a less expensive alternative to the $22 a box Hevi-shot loads, I still have 5 left, so that's enough for a couple more seasons!!

I did a little experiment to satisfy my curiousity, always wondered what kind of pattern I get up close, so I shot the Flight Control load at 10yds, the wad cut a nice paper-punch like hole in the target and almost as deep a hole in the tree it was stapled to as the shot charge, In effect, it would have decapitated mr tom!!

Tim, that would be a taxidermists nightmare, patchin' that thing up.

Nice target you have there, do you have a fresh one that you can post or can you send me a link to the target? I would like to have that one since I lost the last one I had saved.  Thanks if you can, but if you can't, I understand.

Busta, It's a Primos target that I photocopy, the new version looks a bit different...

my mossberg 835 ulti-mag shot the same with the federals, it shot low maybe a foot or so, but the remingtons shot great and are probably what I will be using this year for turkey.

That would depend a lot on the choke tube you're using, there's a big diffrence with the Mad tube which is designed for Hevi-shot. I haven't given up on the Federals yet, but until I try some of my other tubes, the Hevi-shot is going with me when I hunt!
