Ruger Blackhawk 45 colt
« on: March 25, 2006, 07:01:44 AM »
I had  my SS 45 colt converted to rear peep sight with ramp type frt.
This is a great combo for hunting. Now I need a handload for hunting.
I was thinking lead " Keith" type in 200-240 grains. Any suggestions for powder and where to get pre-cast lead bullet.  Deer and hogs up to 100yds.

My Preference for the 45 Colt for hunting is a heavier bullet like a 265gr to the 300grain bullet which can be odered from several places and as far as the loads go you will have to determine that to suit your needs. Have had good results with W296 and H110 for hunting and Unique for plinking loads, With H110 or win. 296 start low and work up according to the loading manuals. :D .............Joe............

There is an amazing amount of info on the 'net. Hogdgon has loading data for standard .45 Colt loads and +P type loads for the Rugers and Contenders. If you like lead bullets, consider the widest, flatest nose bullet you can get. For penetration, consider 300 gr. and up. Probably more than you need for deer.

Old Coach,

I would really like to see a pic of your setup!

I am using AA#9 and a 305 CPBC bullet in my 5.5 inch Ruger.  Its mild and very accurate.

I have never shot a handgun with a peep, how do you like it? Does it tighten up your groups?    Dune

Getting probably the same setup on my single six.  Ordered the ramp and sight from Brownells and should be here tomorrow.  Put the One Ragged Hole on, and for me, it should already be a big improvement.  Once that 1/16 white dot sight gets put on, it should be the cat's meow.  By weeks end, I should be able to get to the range and be able to report on it.

Interested in doing this to my 7 1/2" Bisley in 45 LC. Please provide part numbers for the peep and front blade.
Thanks, RIchard

I have successfully used Bull-x 250 grain cast bullets over a near max charge of unique powder on white tail deer. I ran this through my 4.5 inch Blackhawk. The .452 250 grain slugs are common and affordable since they are the original loading for the 45 Colt and used in cowboy action shooting and produced by many companies.

I had Hogleg Smith do the work for me. He is located in Gainesville, Ga. It is a great pistol. I can hit 1 gal. jugs filled with water at 75 yds. Great show with hollow pt. Shooting with a rest.
