Any suggestions as to calibers that would be a safe rebarrel for this great small ring mauser? Where might I find barrels to fit the small ring mauser?

Anything wrong with the old barrel? I would be guessing it is a 7x57 and if it is and the barrel is good it is a great caliber. Jack O'Conner made a lot of money extoling the virtues of the 7x57. I have a old junker spanish mauser that I sporterised and I wish the bore on mine was better but I still keep it as it does not shoot bad and it is a great caliber.

The 7mm (7x57) mauser round is one of the flatest shooting rounds there is. For a small ring barrel i would search numrich gun parts they will have a choice of calibers too for the small ring and some new 7mm barrels too its up to you.

I was just thinking the other day of building a 7mm short rifle similair to the 94 swede mauser too. I think they will make a perfect first deer gun for the grandkids.(comming soon i hope)

I know that cheap FN 7mm surplus ammo is gone now. I got on the tail end of the supply and got some just before it ranout completely. The only other choices we have with the 7mm ammo is reloading or buying new ammo. I like the Sellier & Bellot 173gr ammo. Its not too available at times too there seems to be a lot of 7mm mauser shooters and not enough 7mm ammo in supply so it sells out fast. When i was buying it i was buying 10 boxes at a time so i would have it when i needed it. I can see your point the ammo is hard to get at affordable prices too. I even got some new brass and rolled my own with 150gr winchester PSP bullets too. I haven't played with my 7mm sporter yet but i look forward to soon. I did shoot it twice now but it wasn't a measured 100yd range. I need to go to a better range to benchrest it and sight it in.

The gun is currently barreled in 7X57 but the barrel is shot. I already have a new custom built in 7X57, but I would like to utilize this action and stock to build a new piece. I've heard that .257 Roberts is a good caliber to build off of the small ring mauser.

I think a .257 roberts is a good choice.

If the action is in excellent condition then there are numerous cartridges; the 6mm Remington, the .257 Roberts, the 6.5x55, the 6.5x57, the 7x57 aand several others. I've one that was sporterised prior to my getting it. Not a bad job of turning the military stock into a mannlicher (SP). The sights were removed and the rifle reblued. The bolt handle was forged. The bore is mint and the barrel ahs been shortened to 22". I have since mounted a Redfield reciever sight and a nice Williams ramp front with hood and post. I also have converted it to cock on opening. the rifle shoots MOA with several loads. The Hornady 175 RNs run 2425 fps, 139 SPBTs are running 2825 fps and Hornady Lt Magnum 150s run 2631 fps.

I've rebarreled a couple in the past to 6mm Rem and 257 Roberts and they made fine conversions. If I didn't have several 6.5 Swedes I'd do one in 6.5x257 with a 1-10 twist. I think that would make a grand "dual" varmint/deer cartridge. 100 gr HPs or SPs for the varmints and 129 SPs for the deer.

I really like the 6mm Remington, I am thinking about creating
a Mauser in that caliber myself. I am getting old enough now that I really
don't like being smacked in the Jaw and Shoulder every time I pull the trigger. I have recently heard of a guy who created a 98 Mauser that fires .35 Remington, I may have to look into that too. A 98 in that caliber would be a sweet little woods gun.

S Summer: You make a good point abt the 35 rem. making a fine choice. The place I differ fm yer opinion is that it seems a waste to make a 98 into a 35... I like the small rings in 35 very much.... To each their own however. MV

Guys the semi-auto's in the larger calibers are a good thing when your older too I like them. I can hammer them and not have to pick up my shoulder on the way home from the range. The 6,5mm swede and 7mm chilean are sweet shooters too. I was never interested in small bores, I was always into big bores the bigger the better but as i'm getting older i shoot less rounds out of my 338win.mag. its for hunting only now.

I heard the 6mm round is a good accurate round too. Its a wonder why are goverment chose the 6.8mm over the 6,mm or 6,5mm?

As to the original question: 7x57, 6.5x55, or .257 Roberts should work. I've got a 6.5x55 M96 sporter and a .257 built on a Turkish M38 action. The .257 is the more accurate of the two, but I think that's just b/c of the military barrel on the Swede.

I've not got a chance to get a deer with either (I keep grabbing my .30-06 when I head out the door

), but both are great shooting on the range. My .257 has not noticeable recoil at all.

The reason for a .35 Remington would simply be to have something different... The 6mm Remington on the other hand is one of the most accurate cartridges I have ever fired, Little recoil, and you can work magic
on it at the reloading bench.

Had my 1891 Argentine small ring mauser rebarreled last December. Gunsmith advised making it a 257 Roberts or 6.5X55 Swedish. Had it made a 257 Roberts and pleased with accuracy and light recoil. Only problem with 257 Roberts is it's harder to find in stores than 6.5X55 in my area.

Actually the cartridge is the proprietary design of the company tryin' to sell the rifles. I'd think the 6.5 Grendel would be a better choice but that was already taken. :wink:

I think the 6mm would of made a better caliber to use over the 6.8mm. I have no clue if the ones picking these calibers for the military know anything about guns. I just wonder sometimes it just makes no sense we go to one direction then do a 180 turn into another direction without thinking. There just planning on changing the M16 uppers so it can handle the 6,8mm round so were going to have the same rifle design thats been plagued with problems ever since it was interduced to this day. Thats not smart.

I think instead of reissuing the M14's they should of purchased brand new russian made saiga's in 308win/nato. It would of been cheaper and they would have a gun thats flawless in any condition(sand) too. Who is doing the tyhinking and incharge of the cookie jar that has all of our money in it. We just never hit the nail on the head when we change things with small arms, i feel we just don't get it right.
