Caliber Reference Guide
« on: March 26, 2003, 08:28:40 AM »
I grew up hunting with shotguns and am fairly new to rifles.  I have an understanding of the "traditional" cartridges like 30-06, 270, 243, etc.  but when people start saying thinks like 30 herritt, 30 AI, 257 roberts, etc. I have no clue what the advantages and disadvantages are.  Do they take more powder or less?  Things like that...

Does anyone know of a web source that may list many of the different calibers, maybe show a picture of them, list special features/aspects, etc.

I know that much of this could be subjective but it could be a starting point.

Thanks.

You can get a reloading book published by any bullet maker (nosler, speer, etc). It will have most cartridges listed with all specs about each.

Another good on-line resouce is The Reload Bench at:

http://www.reloadbench.com/main.html

They have exactly what you are requesting: dimensional drawings (but not photos), history and a little (subjective) info on advantages & disadvantages.
I will often have several windows open at once so I can click back and forth to compare info.
