NEF 10ga turkey pattern
« on: March 28, 2006, 02:16:15 PM »
These are all reloads shot at 30 yards
out of a NEF 10ga with factory turkey
choke measuring .722

2 1/4oz  #5 39grs. bluedot malti metal wad 40 hits in head and neck
2oz #5 38gr Steel powder MM wad 42 hits in  head and neck

2 1/4oz 39gr Blue dot MM wad #6 74 hits in H&N
2oz #6 38gr Steel MM wad 81 hits in H&N

Kind of strange that getting higher hits with 2oz over 2 1/4oz loads must be the powder

2 1/4oz #7 1/2 39 Blue dot MM wad 100 hits H&N
2oz #7 1/2 38gr Steel MM wad 75 hits

Are these good results or should I try tighter choke like .690 my Charles Daly with a Star Dot choke w 1 3/4oz #6 HV Win kill My 10ga I get just a little better pattern with my dads Browning Gold 10ga with the same choke but not much.

Sounds like it is working wonderfully for you.  I would stick with the #6 if you are scoring better than 80 in the kill at 30yds.  That is Awesome.  I am somewhat surprised by these numbers with the factory choke.  My factor choke was junk, and I shot absolutely everything through it to try to get better results.  I trashed the factory one and went with the Kicks GT .690 and a BSA Red Dot.  I'm getting 60+ in the kill at 40 yds and am perfectly pleased.  At 20 yds, I honestly can't count because the pattern is too dense.  The entire head turns yellow when using the Shoot N C target from birchwood.

Sounds like mine is not shooting any better than yours, even after spending $65.00 on my Kicks GT tube!  If it aint broke...don't fix it.

Good Luck

I think what helps me with the factory choke is most guys shooting lead turkey loads are factory loads, all mine are reloads and another thing is I am using steel shot wads instead of lead wads. I think it holds the pattern tighter then the thin lead wads, all of the shot is in the hard plactic wad were as lead wad uses thin plastic and half the shot isnt even in the wad. I'm going to make some duplexs and triplexs up and see how they work. I think ut to 40yards these loads will put enough pellets on the target to kill.

I use a Hastings ported turkey choke out of mine and I get around 100 #4s in a 10" cicle at 40 yds.  Thats with Win. HV loads. TC
