Cast lead friendly replacement barrels?
« on: March 29, 2006, 04:43:45 AM »
My club's indoor range prohibits jackets bullets.  I own several Glocks, so it makes for a long winter not being able to fire these with lead bullets indoors.  Does anyone have any recomendations as to a good brand of replacement, lead-safe barrels?  I don't need a "match-grade", just a good one for practice.  Also, how much would I expect to spend?  Thanks for the input

My aftermarket barrels for my Glocks are made by Federal Ordanance. If I were in the market today, I'd buy the "Lone Wolff" barrels. They are a heck of a deal for under $100!

The aftermarket barrels I have had experience with shoot as well or better with both cast and jacketed as the factory Glock barrels. The only problem I have had with mine is a short chamber FO barrel for my Glock 21. A couple of the guys I shoot with have the LW barrels and are very pleased.

I like KKM barrels and I think they're worth the extra money. The EDM process leaves leaves the inside really smooth and easy to clean.

my gunsmith recomended the Wilson Combat barrels, anyone have any experience with them?  (he also said that the Briley barrels are tough to work with, as they all may require fitting.)

I know it has been done.  My shooting partner has shot thousands of lead bullets through his G19 and 926, but my gunsmith advised me that he is playing with fire.  Apparently, the polygonal rifling causes lead build up in the throat and can increase chamber pressure to a dangerous level.  I don't want to talk down to anyone doing it, but an extra 100 or so bucks is cheap insurance and piece of mind, for me.

:)  Any broach-cut barrel will shoot lead.  I don't know of an aftermarket Glock barrel that isn't button-cut; so they, all, should handle lead bullets just fine.  The advice you've been given on Lone Wolf barrels is sound.  Other than personal preference, there really isn't any good reason to spend more money on another brand of replacement barrel for a Glock.  A Lone Wolf replacement barrel will do everything you need it to do; and, it's not going to cost you a lot of money.

(Remember, you're only going to get just so much accuracy improvement out of the typical Glock lockup and slide rail system.)

I've been buying the same brand of replacement barrel for many years; so all of my replacement barrels happen to be extended length Bar-Sto's.  However, on a Glock, this is strictly because of my strong personal preference for EDM, 'slit-cut' muzzle ports rather than for any presumed improvement in accuracy.

I honestly believe you'd be very happy with, either, a Lone Wolf or Storm Lake replacement barrel on your Glock; and, you'd be a lot richer - too!  With a Glock it really does come down to which brand you prefer.  ;)
