Forearm screws backing out
« on: March 29, 2006, 01:36:43 PM »
Anyone had a problem with their forearm screw backing out?  I was on a muzzleloader hunt in Illinois last season and I had to keep checking and tightening the darn things.  I know that locktite is out. any suggestions?

try some white plumbers tape. Works well on screw on muzzle brakes as well.

You could try lockwashers.

Try little clear finger nail polish.  It will hold the screw but will let go easily when you change out the forearm.

I have shot my encore 25-06 1 session. It was a good shooter. But the screws came out in about 40 rounds.
I shot my encore 375 h&h magnum 1 session. It was great by the way. But the screws came out in 24 rounds.

I have ordered several sets of screws for these encores.
It looks as if will need them.

Does anyone know if the screws are softer than the barrels?
That is will the screw threads give way wiithout damaging the riifle threads?

How tight do you turn screws?
Do you check and retighten every few rounds?

I saw the tape suggestion and will try it.

Is lock tight good here?

Is this a common occurrence?

Thanks,
Earl

No for me it is not a common occurrence. I currently have 5 complete Encores, 45 Cal M/L, two 50 Cal M/lL's , a 7mm08 and a 22-250. I have never had a forearm screw back out.

Find a compression washer and try it.
