2 Guns Looking for 2 Scopes from OpticZone
« on: March 29, 2006, 05:54:43 PM »
Did some spring cleaning on the gun safe and traded several guns bought when I was young and broke for 2 nice used guns.  Now need to find some nice glass to put on them (old cheap glass went with old cheap guns).  Here are guns & current thoughts based upon review of posts:

Gun #1 - Remington 700 VS (Varmint Synthetic) 22-250, 1" med. rings already on gun, use: coyotes, prairie dogs and recreational plinking/targets.

Scope thoughts for Gun #1:
a.  Nikon Monarch 6.5-20x44 ILL PLEX
b.  Nikon Monarch 6.5-20x44 PLEX
c.  Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40
d.  Leupold VX-III ???

Gun #2 - Remington 700 ABG (African Big Game) 416 Rem. Mag., weaver steel base - no rings yet, use: bear & moose, maybe Africa some day.

Scope thoughts for Gun #2:
a.  Nikon Monarch Gold 1.5-6x42 (30mm)
b.  Leupold VX-III 1.5-5x20 ILL PLEX
c.  Trijicon AccuPoint 1.25-4x24
d.  Bushnell Elite 4200 1.6-6x36 Firefly

Budget = approx. $1000 (total for both scopes) - looking for best bang for the buck.  I'm open to other personal recommendations as well.  Will buy from Jon @ OpticZone, so please limit responses to scopes he carries.  Thanks in advance for the help.

OK,  Lets see..........I love to spend other peoples money!

Gun #2 The 1.5x6x42 you have in mind is absolutely perfecto. Love 30mm,6x and 42mm.
Gun #1......Zeiss Conquest 4.5x14x44 with standard reticle. Plenty of magnification, good lowlight capability without a huge objective.

Buy the best scope you can for your varmint rifle and buy the scope for the 416 when you plan to go to Africa

Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44 = $580
Nikon Monarch 5.5-16.5x44 = $360
Is there $220 of noticable difference?

For $520 can get Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40?

Too many choices - help!

No, not $220 worth.

Answer to scope #1: neither.  Look at either the Elite 4200 4x-16x-40mm or, as you are now considering, the Nikon Monarch 5.5x-16.5x-44.

Answer to scope #2: without a doubt, the Leupold VX-III model.

The Monarchs I have looked through have great glass no doubt. But they didn't have the field of view that I seen in the Conquest models. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the advice all.  Called Jon and ordered a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x50.  I took a drive to Bass Pro and compared the Conquest to the Leupold VX-III and Nikon Monarch and liked the brightness and clarity of the Zeiss over the others.  Seemed to produce the best resolution for my eye.  Chose the 50 because the model had target turrets.

Still looking for something for the .416 Rem. Mag.  I'd like to find a well built illuminated scope in a low-mag variable configuration.  I like the Leupold VX-III 1.5-5x20 ILL, but I'm a little concerned with the ability of the 20mm objective to draw light.  I like the Nikon Monarch Gold 1.5-6x42, but I don't really need that much objective plus the added weight of a 30mm tube.  Maybe a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x36?

Any other suggestions for a scope that is:
1.  Low magnification (variable);
2.  1" tube;
3.  4+" eye relief;
4.  Recoil rated for .416 Mag;
5.  Around $600, new or used;
6.  Illuminated (least important)?

I have a 1.25-4x20 Schmidt & Bender for a 375 H&H that is being built, it is quit bright even by moonlight.  At 5x your scope would have an exit pupil of 4mm, dependent on your age, health and whether you’re a smoker, your pupils will dilate from about 1.5 mm in bright light to 9 mm in low light.  As you age your pupils dilate less, if you are much over forty or a smoker your pupils are likely to dilate to a max of 7 mm but probably closer to 5mm.  If you are hunting between most legal hours it will be of little concern as regardless of the scope’s exit pupil diameter your eyes pupils will probably be dilated less then the scopes exit pupil during legal hunting times.

On a hard recoiling rifle eye relief is the concern and on a dangerous game rifle so is field of view.

I assume that big Remington mag is to shoot nasty beasties that could either trample you or eat you and that you will be shooting at moderate range. How about a fixed power scope - more durable and trustworthy, and you won't accidently have it cranked up to a magnification too high to get on target quickly.

I think I found something slightly used that will work:  Leupold Mark 4 1.5-5x20 MR/T M2 30mm Illuminated w/ Mark 4 rings & covers.  Picked up everthing for $700 and change.  Hopefully everything works.

Thanks for the recommendations.
