Colt .38 super auto
« on: March 30, 2006, 05:57:58 AM »
I have a Colt model 1911 auto in .38 super that I would like to start loading ammo for. I have been loading ammo for a lot of years, but have never loaded the .38 super. I was thinking about loading a 124 grain hollow point bullet. There are so many powders listed in my reloading manuals for the .38 super, that I am having a hard time trying to decide which powder to use. Could someone that loads ammo for the .38 super give me some suggestions on what powder or powders have worked well for you.

As you're looking for load data be sure that you avoid the competition loads that are designed for "major" performance. Some of these can be very high pressure for your old Colt. Stick with standard loads only. You can't really go wrong with Winchester 231 as a good readily available general handgun powder that will work in that gun. Winchester WSF will give you a little more velocity with the same pressure. You'll probably want to stick with roundnose bullets because I think your gun may pre-date the practice of making feeding ramps that work with other designs.

I load:

Bullet: Sierra 115 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point
Powder: 10.0 grains of Blue Dot
Primer: CCI-500
Case: Remington
Firearm: Colt 1911
Velocity: 1408 FPS @ 15' from muzzle

For a 124 grain bullet I would use:
Lil'Gun From 13.5 grains to 14.0 grains
 CCI-500 Primer
