Extremely Long Throat

I just purchased a Handi with the 22"bb .223.  I was doing some load development and found out it has a really long throat.  (Seated a 55gr PSP so it was just in the case and it still did not touch the lands).  I was woundering if anyone else has run into this problem.

I've never heard of 1 223 that you could reach the lands with the bullet.They all have long throats.  Digger

It's a fact of life for most Handi calibers exept the 45-70 which is short throated!! Most everyone loads .223 to SAAMI COL and they shoot just fine. Do a search, many threads on it.

When I load to a standard OAL, I have TWO TENTHS of an inch of freebore in my .223 Ultra Varmint.  From what I see here, I guess that's about normal.

My .243 Handi would not shoot - 6" groups. I measured the chamber and started seating out to the lands. Last group was 1/2". I don't know what I would do if I did not reload.

I had a 243 ultra that had an short throat.  We I used factory ammo it really did not shoot good at all.  After I got my dies and did some load testing.  Sub MOA.

thats th first newer 223 i've heard of thats had a long throat, i had a old 223 that had a long throat i just seated the bullet 22 cal in the case and it shot ok.

i really don't have much help for you, sorry just don't give up

45/70 throat

quick, my buff classic has a short throat and it engraves the cast bullets that I want to use for about .375 in or so.  Can I ream the throat or do I need to get a gunsmith to do it? If I can do it do you have any suggestions about where to rent a reamer? Thanks Wes

I just throated my .35 Remington Handi barrel, it's a piece of cake!!! Total cost was less than $30 including return shipping on the reamer. Several others here have throated their .45-70s, so I figured I could do my own, it's easy! Rental was $20.75 to me, then $6.35 to return it insured priority mail, I used the USPS online Click-N-Ship so I didn't even have ta wait in line at the PO to mail it back!!

Quick, thanks for the quick reply I will have to check it out. You said you just finished your 35 rem. is this a rechamber job or have I missed something? I like the 35 Rem but didn't know it was a handi chambering. I have a 357 and really like it but don't shoot it or anything else much do to job constraints. Read that as I work to much. Wes

It's a rechamber from a .357Max which was originally a .357Mag!! Haven't shot it yet, still waitn on Beartooth bullets! :?

Quick, I like my 357 mag to much to rechamber it but I guess a new barrel in 357 mag could be used. Thanks for the reply I don't get to post much but always learn something from lurking around here.  I am on a rare day off and it is nice to be able to get answers like you have provided.   Wes
