I know, it's been done...But if you had to choose only one, which is your favorite deer hunting caliber.  (Old faithful classics or new fangled hot-rods?)

PS- To start things off. I would hunt the rest of my days with the .270 Win

Chaulk another one up for the .270 Winchester.
I like a lot of different calibers for deer, I'm currently using a .30-06.
But if I could only have one, the old .270 would be it.
Nothing knocks them down dead like a .270 in my experiences.

I'm splittin' hairs here... I just can't go deer hunting (rifle season) without my 1955 99f shootin' .300 Savage. 180 gr corelok, seem to be the quickest knockdown, with best mushroom, and least meat loss.

Put one up for the good old .30-30. I like to get in close and hunt the rough stuff. I really enjoy hunting with a .50 cal muzzleloader, using a patched round ball, so using the .30-30 is a huge step ahead in technology.

For hardwoods hunting around here, a .50 cal muzzleloader is all that's really needed.  That said, in the unlikely event that a second shot is needed then make mine a .35 Remington in a fast handling lever action.  I don't know why, as I have used a bolt action .243 for many deer, but for what ever reason, the traditional and nostalgic lever action and deer hunting seem to be just like peas and carrots........For me, it just seems the natural choice.

When I was a kid with a lever gun, I couldn't wait to get me a whizbanger........seems like I've made it full circle, and get a lot of pleasure out of the more traditional muzzle loader or lever gun hunting.......and the 100 year old cartridges such as the 45.70, 30.30, 32 winchester special, 300 savage, among others, that my granddad might have used bring a sort of inner peace just by holding one of the old timers in my lap while waiting on a deer.......don't really know, but I guess it has a lot to do with a simpler time when everything was slower, when the town closed at noon on saturday, and everyone had time to do what they needed to do.

The 30.30 in a winchester or marlin is the gun that most kids found under the tree on christmas, just like dads.......

Specifically for deer in my section of the country, not an all-arounder?

.35 Remington. I hunt deer in the eastern hardwoods and a long shot is 100 yards.

For an all-arounder, the .30-06. This is good for deer across the country, not just where I hunt.

The nice thing about this subject keep comming up is that you can keep changing your mind! My new favorite deer cartridge is the new 6.5x55 I got! Last year I think it was my 6.5-06, the year befor my 25-06 and the year befor that a 308! Getting in touch with my feminine side! :D If these damn firearms companies would quit making new stuff (6.5x55?) this would be much easier!

By the way, I think I saw my new ex-wife today!

There are several I can choose from, but the first one on my list has got to be my Remington M-7 in 7mm-08 Remington!

This is one things you just have to love about america.....so many choices and none of them wrong!   Personal preference and opinions vary but any of the above will make a great deer gun.

My current fav is .257 Roberts, but as another poster mentioned, that position of favorite tends to change from time to time. 6.5x55 is good too but my only 6.5 is a little less accurate than I'd like (3" to 4" 100yd groups with most loads I try), so I tend not to use it as much as I'd like.

My favorite deer cartridge is the .25-06.

I have taken deer with the .25-06, .243, and .30-06.  They were all dead deer, and these are all effective cartridges for deer.  Certainly there are other effective deer cartridges.  The reason why I prefer the .25-06 is that it is very flat shooting and entirely adequate for deer without being arguably TOO MUCH.  Nothing wrong with the .30-06, but it is a little over bearing and more powerful than needed.  I also prefer the .25-06 for pronghorn antelope.

This is always a tough question for me. All around probably .308w. But .243 and .30-30 are up there in my book
.
.308 edges the others in the at&t(reach out and touch someone) dept.Better terminal ballistics out to 250-300 yds than the .243w.

The .30-30 crankaction just isn't a longrange gun, but it's probably put more deer on the ground and venison on the table than any other caliber in the last 100+ years.

I havn't seen any speeches from the preachers of the all-holy-church of magnums... ;)

.270 is my favorite but hunt much of the time with my 30-30. Most hunting I do does not require a long shot.

Growing up I wanted the Rifleman's rifle...a Winchester Model 94 with the big round oversized lever action on it.  Hang the caliber, I didn't even know what caliber was.  I just wanted to bang out round after round and swing that gun in that same old way.

Well, my first gun, the Win 94 in 30-30 caliber was Grand but it let me down on its first hunt when I was groping for some modicum of success(open sights in a fog are no good when a scope would have brought home meat) that I immediately purchased a Win Model 70 in 270 caliber with a 3x9 scope and that has been my constant companion for 20+ years afield.  Nothing finer than the Model 70 in 270 caiber.

I have really come to love my .300 Weatherby. I use it on everything in North America... including some long range coyote shooting. I've come to appreciate the famous quote "fear the man with one gun."

It all depends where I'm at  :)

In the darkwoods .35 Remington or 30-30 Marlin 336's and or the .243 Win as a back up rifle.

The farmland or prairie range of eastern Montana, my All Weather Ruger M77, Mk II in 30-06 will be the chosen one.
