:D   Ahh, so many rifles, so little time

This year it's going to be a sweet Savage 99 EG in 300 Sav.

Last year it was an Encore 30/06 ( two big does within 20 seconds/fast reload).  Same Encore w/ 50 cal MZ barrel is my go to for black power season.

Year before last, Ruger M77 300 Win Mag.  My bean field rifle.  Lased 327 yard shot on a big doe, dropped in her tracks

Many others:  Marlin 336 35 Rem.,  Ruger M77 243 Win.,  M1 Garand (yes they make great deer rifles).

Model 8 Remington 30 and Winchester 94 30-30 and Ruger 44 Carbine  (the Old Mans rifles I grew up with).  Like I said; so many rifles, so little time :-D

I shudder anytime I think about having only one rifle, but, if I could only have one and didn't plan on hunting game the size of elk or larger nor anything that could make a serious bite on my a$$ (that doesn't mean blackies) I would hunt the rest of my days with a model 700 or model 7 in 7-08.

mmmmmm, model 7 w/a 1.5x5 or 2x7 scope in 7-08.  Pack it all day and don't even know its there.

Quote from: tscott
I'm splittin' hairs here... I just can't go deer hunting (rifle season) without my 1955 99f shootin' .300 Savage. 180 gr corelok, seem to be the quickest knockdown, with best mushroom, and least meat loss.

  Slight variation: A 1952 99R in .300 Savage.  Remington 150 grain
core-lokt shells  with a Redfield 3x-9x  (wideview) scope.
Not only is this (.300 Savage) a great round but the rifle itself is part of
the early American gun culture.  Guys that own-um know what i

Add another one for the .270 Win.

Most shots around here are 50 - 75 yards max. My favorite for that is Marlin 45/70 Guide Gun. For the occassional longer set-up, a Ruger M77 MK2 in 30/06.

:D That is kinda like asking which gal would make the best wife, there ain't no right answer.

For hunting the small West Texas whitetails, my .243 works great.  When I go to Ms or Al, I prefere the .35 Remington, out west for the big mulies it is either a 7mm or 300 mag.

But if I could only have one gun for all my hunting, I would still choose the 30-06.

My old Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55 is my most accurate, but it's to beat that old .30-30. I am thinking about moving up to one of those more modern cartridges. Either the 7x57, or 7mm-08.

Favorite deer cartridge is the 7x57. My favorite rifle is my 30-06 03A3. If I have to go with one rifle it'd have to be the 30-06.

I'd have to say 7mm-08. It's just about perfect for my hunting here in Alabama.

Early deer season here in Oregon I'll take the the TC White Mtn carbine, or my old 3040 Krag. Then it's off to the High Cascades and the Winchester Mod 70 in 3006 for Elk. Prob. stay with the 06 for the rest of deer and Bear season. " I hate these hard decisions"

The great 308 in an accurate high capacity semi. The deep dark dense woods or the open prairie, short range, long range, all ranges.

An old friend of mine, now departed, had the answer.

The question he answered is applicable here: the question was 'what makes a good elk gun'. His answer: Most any damn gun in the hands of a good elk hunter. Substitute 'deer' for 'elk' and there's your answer.

Have a great day. I'm sure having one!

For most of my hunting - the .300 Sav. in a Rem 760 pump, 150 grn. core-loct bullets, a Redfield Widefiled 1.75x-5x w/post cross hair reticle .... and I'm ready to go! ;)

Hunting elusive Pacific Northwest Blacktail has taught me long ago the 30/30 loaded with 170gr Federals to be the winning combination.
