Possible MISPRINT for 180 grain Nosler for 300 Weatherby!!!
« on: April 02, 2006, 11:05:09 AM »
I spawned a thought just now (I know...doesn't happen often).

For my 300 Weatherby, my go to load has been a 180 grain Nosler Partition over IMR7828 SSC.

Nosler manual[/u]
80.5 - 84.5 grains of IMR7828

IMR manual(same bullet)[/u]
72.5 - 80.3 grains of IMR7828

I don't know about you, but I think that's QUITE a span.  And the fact that the Nosler MINIMUM is the IMR MAXIMUM??? A little scary, I think. Also, the Speer manual is pretty close to the Nosler data. I have sent an email to the Nosler Forum administrator and await his response.

Whaddaya think?

Both may be right for the rifle they were shot in. Nosler uses an indoor range and runs their tests out of barreled actions in a vice. Every manual will tell you to start at least 10% below max and work up watching for pressure signs. Take 10% off the Nosler load and you'll be at about 76grs as a start load, well below the max load in either mannual.

Uh, sorry. That ain't happenin'! When the MINIMUM load listed in the Nosler manual is 80.5 grains, there's no way in hell I'm going down to 75 grains.

Sorry......I'll wait to hear back from Nosler. At this point, I'm less trustful of IMR than I am Hodgdon.

I have loaded .300 Weathery with 180's thusly:
IMR-7828 From 71.4 grains to 86.0 grains
 Federal 215 Primer

I had no problems with the lightsest or the heaviest loads.

However, it all depends on your firearm and the lots of the different components you use.

Why? A reduction to 75g is not going to hurt by any means; obviously you are starting out at a different point since you already know wht load you and your rifle like; but dropping down to 75g will only give you a low velocity, the amount of loss of capacity is not enough to even approach the detonation level that I think you are thinking of.

Beyond that, while detonation is a known item; it has not been produced in any lab, the that further reduces the chance of it ever happening.

Range Report:

Shot all 5 groups today. Starting loads were 80.5. They went up 1 grain all the way to 84.5 grains.

With a pretty stiff 15-20 mph crosswind, the best group was just over an inch. No signs of pressure up through the highest load.

I will now start to play with seating depth to see if I can't shrink those groups and accurize the load.

Next loads will be 220 grain Sierra RN's (Pro-Hunters). Anybody have a load they've used for these?
