Should we give out load data?
« on: April 04, 2006, 04:05:19 PM »
I recently read a post wrong and gave out load data for a 7-30 Waters when the questioner was asking for 7TCU. I corrected, but it made me wonder: should we give out load data on this forum? I like to be helpful, but in this case I was a moron and I could have been sued. Any thoughts?

You make a good point [I did read that post]. But, I respectfully submit : that anyone who uses "unknown" load data without consulting at least one [more is obviously preferred] reliable, published, source, is the one who should be sued,  for bein' a stoop!!! But I also believe that one should own, use, and learn to consult a chronograph. Just because one can exceed accepted velocities, w/ yer concoction, without blowin' yer dumb butt off, does not mean that it is either safe for you or your poor overstressed, firearm. Whew!! All that off my feeble mind. I appreciate sharing good, useable, been tested to be successful, load data. Stuff like "the load" would be an insider secret w/o our communications. [I just typed a nasty "besides" but I'll keep it to meeself].... Keep that [good, tested] load data comin' to those of us who know how to use it.    The rest can look the other way.   Thanks... MV.  . BTW You did indeed correct your data almost immediatly! What more can one ask?

I have given load data, but in my opinion the person asking for it needs to be responsible enough to look it up and make sure it falls with in specs. The ultimate responsibility lie's on the loader himself. I know form experience, what works for my gun may not shoot well in your gun. Always make sure you have reloading manuals to check loads. I have 7 different reloading manuals.  :D

I can use the analogy that giving out load data is like giving out driving advise. Just because you use the advise I give, does not preclude you from responsiblity. Anyone who loads their own ammo based entirely on data they have extracted from third hand web info is a fool.

While I agree completely I am not sure that common sense wins out in court.  And not being a lawyer I don't know if any disclaimer is enough to protect people.  Good discussion and a good question.

No, you should not.  Or rather I would say, do so at your own risk.  Remember, it doesn't always matter how stupid the victim is.

There would always be some question with regard to liability. The fact remains that some people need protected from themselves. In those cases some people would be better served taking up hobbies similar to 'butterfly collecting' or 'underwater basket weaving'.

MIKE.
I'M LIKE YOU I LIKE TO HELP OR WHEN I FIND A LOAD FOR ONE OF MY GUNS THATS REALLY I LIKE TO LET PEOPLE KNOW. BUT STANDING AROUND WITH FRIENDS THAT ALL OF US RELOAD IS ONE THING. I KNOW I'M LIKE SOME OF THE REST I HAVE SEVERAL RELOADING MANUALS AND USE THEM. BUT SOMETIMES THERE MIGHT BE A POWDER BRAND,BULLET STYLE,OVERALL LENGTH,ETC. THAT JUST MIGHT MAKE A WHOLE LOT OF DIFFERENCE IN A CALIBER. I ASK SOMETIMES JUST TO SEE IF THERE IS ANY THING I MIGHT BE MISSING. SO IF NO ONE RESPONDS HOW CAN YOU FIND OUT. THOUGHT THATS WHAT THESE FORUMS ARE FOR. LIKE YOU MIXED EMOTIONS HUH!!! I HOPE WE STILL CAN HELP ON ANOTHER AND NOT HAVE TO WORRY,CAUSE I JUST BOUGHT A SUPER 16" 223 AND WAS GOING TO ASK FOR SOME FAVORITE LOADS AND POWDERS FOR A STARTING POINT JUST FOR BUDGET PURPOSES.
GOOD LUCK
BENNY :D [/b]

The best way to test a 4x4 is to drive it down a dirt road.
If you take your 4x4 and drive it down a dirt road down the side of a mountain and fall off, is it my fault?

I give out lots of load data.  I get lots of load date.  Always try to use the caveat, work up in your own gun or my load works in my gun, work up slowly and watch for pressures.

Magazines and Newspapers have typos.  It is possible to get typo$ in here also.  You never know when soneome is going to hit the wrong key.  Smart to check your loads, use info as a basis of establishing your own data, and stay safe.

Steve   :D

Oh, it was 3.2 grains, not 32.0.  Hope you didn't load too many!!   :)

Thank you all.

After thinking about it, I have decided that I will give out powder recomendations and a link to the manufacture's site. Hodgdon has a good variety of loads on their site. You can download Winchester's manual. These were the only two I checked. I would guess most are or will be publishing it on the web in the future (I don't think they make a lot of money from their manuals).  If the questioner can find this site, they should be able to get most load info from the horses mouth.

I may say that my gun shoots best xx grains under the maximum.
