I'm also a contender guy. I haven't had the chance to shoot an encore yet, but it is probably better for the budget if I put that off as long as possible. I'm going to be out of town for the next couple of days giving the 'ol contender a workout in Texas.  I'm going to be hunting some hogs (I hope).  I'll post up again when I get back into town.

And here I thought that cknight, this wealth of knowledge about my TC questions was a grizzled old geezer that started out in muskets cause they didn't have shells when he was a kid.  I'm glad I'm not the only moderator that is the ripe old age of 23  I started hand loading when I was about 8, dad has always done it do I had a good teacher.   I got my first hand-rifle, and XP-100 in 7mmBR when I was 15, had to trade it off a few years ago for a Browning Citori, but I vowed that I would get back into the hand cannons, and now I got my .454 Casull, hopefully I'll get a .20 PPC barrel soon, but I doubt it.  It's a horrible addiction, glad you're here to help us out.

Hey!!!!  watch what ya say about old geezers.....I'm pushin 64.    :)   LOL

 It's a pleasure meeting you guys on this great form. I have had a Contender pistol in 22 flavor for ummmm..can't remember how long,I'm old you know....and just coverted it into a 30-30 carbine. I took a liken to the single shots altho most of mine are NEFs that I have rechambered and played with to make real shooters. Thinkin about building that Encore just for giggles.

I'm glad you guys took up the torch as moderators.  I volunteered, but with my computer skills its probably better you all got the nod  :-D .

I just got my first contender over the winter, and will hopefully in the next two months have the funds to make it into a carbine.  I have the barrel, scope, dies, and powder...now just need a stock, brass, and bullets!  I'm working on getting wood for the stock now and will ship it off to Bulberry soon after I recieve it.

I've always been intrigued by single shot rifles, and soon I think I will have the perfect hunting rifle!  I will keep you all updated how things come out!

17 and counting here....and I don't mean age, I mean barrels for Contenders and Encores! I'm only 49 (for a few more months) and have been handloading since 1966-yep-13 with my Dad. I can only wish everyone had, or has the opportunity to have a Dad to load, hunt and shoot with. I still have mine and he still drools over my gun safes! He says it's the 23 year old in him. It must be a majic number. My 30 Herrett was purchased right after I read Bob Mileks first article--I still have both!! GBO is a great site and I hope it continues. There is so much information shared respectfully, and I have met a lot of new friends though the site. After all is said and done, I can honestly say I don't have a favorite TC caliber, but I have about four or five I could never live without. the are 223, either 7x30 or 6.5jdj, a 308, a 30'06, a 367jdj, and a 45-70. I only chose the 308 cuz I have a match rifle and have some superb target loads for long range. Hunting? the '06 or 375 gets the nod most of the time.

Well, I'm back. Not that great of a hunt. We had a cold front blow in as we arrived in camp and the game was just not to be found. I hunted hard for 2 days and did not get a single opportunity. Oh, well. We had a great time anyway and that's hunting. We did bring home a couple of small stupid ones, so it wasn't a complete skunk. Still better than working.

Here's the cool part. We got done with the trip and I took a couple of guys who haven't shot anything bigger than a semi-auto handgun out to a hill and did some firing with the 7x30. I love seeing the look on their face when they realize that the round that has them intimidated by its size is a real fun shooter. There is one more guy running around looking for a contender frame to buy and maybe 2. Now I get to reload some more and help with the shopping. I love spending other people's money! :)

Now all  you reloading guys-do you reload so you can shoot more or do you shoot so you can reload more? I myself cant answer this question. I have more reloading goodies than I have guns to reload for, although with the reaqcuisistion of a Contender I intend to remedy this  problem very soon. I bought my first Contender in 1997 in .357 Max. Three years later, like a damned fool, I traded it for a Super Blackhawk. I have been kicking myself ever since.

Beyond a doubt, I reload to shoot. I started reloading to support my brand new 7x30 habit. I bought and sold several barrels since, but the 7x30 is still here. In the future, I need to buy another 7x30 barrel and a frame so I can have a matching pistol and carbine. Let the wife and kids shoot the carbine when they get ready to start hunting. That darn gun is truly the most fun thing that I have ever shot.  :-D

  That is a tough question....I enjoy reloading as much as shooting. The only ammo that I purchase is 22 and 17 rimfire. Now starting to play with some wildcats and like forming the cases and experimenting with different loads.
   Sounds like you are sweet on that 7x30.   Just got a 30-30 barrel for my carbine and kinda wished I found a 7x30...oh well..I'll put it on the list..LOL
